    Lewis Johnston

Roos talking up the possibility of Johnston playing senior footy around mid year at the end of this unrelated article.

Roos feels Crows' pain and calls for substitutes - AFL.com.au

Roos was encouraged by the return of young key forward Lewis Johnston after almost a year on the sidelines.

"It was good to see him back out there running around and getting hold of the football," he said of the Swans' No.12 pick at the 2008 NAB AFL Draft.

"He's going to be two or three weeks away from getting back to full fitness and then playing well in the seconds, but hopefully in five or six weeks' time, he'll be putting pressure on to get a senior game."

Amen to that. Now I know why we drafted him. Noice.

I was there on Saturday and was quite impressed, given how long he's been on the sidelines. Didn't do a lot but what he did was good.

I'm just happy to hear that he was on the ground, played a bit and survived. Of course the fact that he showed some class as well is terrific news. We have been sort of left ruefully wondering, with Lewis our top draft pick in 2008, and Vespremi and Meredith our top picks in 2007 (I think), what kind of difference it might have/will make if any of them can actually make it to the firsts and stay there. Here's hoping Lewis' foot problems are totally behind him now.

I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up with GC or GWS...that also goes for Vespremi and Barlow.

Why, if Johnston and Vespremi are good enough (and they show all signs that they are) we would not be interesred in trading him.

Barlow is slightly, on his day he is a very capable footballer but he is struggling to get a game at present in a stronger side. If GC or GWS saw something in him and were willing to offer a contract and an opportunity to play then yes I could see him taking it up.

If we lose anyone it will be blokes like Bevan, Barlwo and maybe Pyke who are capable but just not getting a game.

The others are no where near that situation.

I think we have to realise - along with all the other clubs - that we're going to lose some players to GC and GWS that we'd rather keep.

I'd let go of Vespremi simply because he seems to be injury prone. In Johnston's case, he hasn't even played seniors yet, but has missed a whole year because of injury. Barlow - there's a question mark about how hungry he is. I agree Pyke might go, and probably Bevan. But there'll be others.

AFAIK, Vez, Smith, Meredith, White, Barlow, Moore & Bird are all signed up 2011+

I think LJ will stay if retained.

Hannebery is most likely to become a GC/GWS target [out of contract @ the end of this year]

                          ========

Maybe I'm paranoid, but I'm pretty sure some news items from the last couple of years regarding contract extensions have been removed from the Swans website during the last few months.

He's one I'm sure none of us want to let go! I hope the club moves heaven and earth to keep him.

We will lose players no doubt, but in a lot of ways we are in a good situation where our senior core such as Kirk, J Bolton, Goodes, C Bolton, O'Keefe, Kennelly, Shaw, Seaby, Bradshaw, Richards will all be of an age that GC or GWS won't be interested in.

The other lot including Bird, Jack, Johnston, Merideth, White, Currie, Rohan, Jetta and anything younger won't really be targets as they will have 20 of the best underage kids already on their list.

It is blokes that are in between that will be the issue, where both teams will target those that are not getting games or offer them better coin to go across. These are the likes of Bevan, Moore, Barlow, Smith, LRT, Grudy, McVeigh, Malceski, Mattner, McGlynn, Kennedy. Mummy.

There are a few in that lot that I would not like to see go (Grundy, McVeigh, Malceski, McGlynn, Mattner, Mummy), but in all honesty if we lost one or two and were adequately compensated that wouldn't be a real issue.
