Wow, that's a surprise. I thought LRT had a good season last year - sounds like it was almost his last.
Asked whether it came to this way or the highway, Roos said: ''I think it got to that stage. It was that blunt with Lewie. We were frustrated he just wanted to go away from what we wanted him to do. In his best seasons he was a really aggressive, hard, tough one-on-one defender who was very hard to get a kick on. He started to stray a little bit away from that and it was just a matter of trying to get him back into that. The man who laughs has not yet heard the terrible news -
I think that article was fairly misleading in terms of what Roosy said! LRT had a good season last year! Don't really think he was close to it being his last.
I feel like maybe what Roosy was saying was to highlight how LRT has been following his rules and sticking to the coaching plan eg. stopping the man rather than trying to mark etc.
All in all though good to know LRT is back on track and playing as he did in 05 GF. Maybe in comes in 5s- 2005, 2010?Comment

It's funny. I also thought that LRT had his best year last year - certainly in terms on numbers - disposals, marks, etc, he was right up there. And I seem to recall really enjoying seeing him linking up as the ball was brought out of defence, running and carrying a bit more. It was nerve-wracking, but exciting.
However, it clearly wasn't the role he was asked to play and watching him yesterday, he certainly has gone back to basics and is just trying to stop his man and nothing more. Does a bloody good job of it too.
Many other players these days would quite possibly consider going elsewhere, if they felt they could do more than what the coaching staff was allowing in the game plan. It's a credit to LRT that he can see how his place in the team is important and has taken it on board. There are more than enough others to run and carry it out of the backline now.Comment

His work in defence yesterday was one of the main reasons we were so close after the first quarter. He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)Comment

All he has to do is beat his man and get the ball in the hands of Eski, Irish, Mattner, B2 or Shaw and off they go. His job is done.
He did take a couple of good marks during kick-ins yesterday too, the Andrew Dunkley school of defence."Fortunately, this is the internet, so knowing nothing is no obstacle to having an opinion!." Beerman 18-07-2017Comment

A surprising article, having rewatched a number of the games from late last season, it just confirmed that he was very very good last year, marking, spoiling, running out of defence. Seems they just want the first two.
I would have been devastated if they'd traded him, I don't like seeing home grown guys let go and LRT is a cult figure to me!Comment

His performance couldn't be termed "solid". Fumbles, turnovers, resulting goals. I had him above Richards at the start of the season, but now not so sure. That said I don't think Ted is putting pressure on the position from the 2's.The eternal connundrum "what happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object" was finally solved when David Hasselhoff punched himself in the face.Comment

Anyway, I reckon LRT is as solid as a rock and has been for a long time now. For some reason, he just seems to attract the ire of people - maybe it's the lumbering style as he gets around, the blond mop, or the toothpaste commercial teeth. Whatever the source, it is not deserved.
When thumbing through the record during the Tigers game (since the game was over at the 12 minute mark of the first quarter, there was time to have a flick) I had to do a double take at the disposal efficiency stats for the club's list.
At the top and better than all others, with an overall disposal efficiency of 84.2% (measured across last season and this one), was Mr Lewis Roberts Thomson. Puts some of the criticisms of him for his clangers into perspective I reckon!
If you surveyed anyone who knew anything about the Swans, I bet not one of them would have picked that!
With the mosquito fleet now amassed around him to carry the ball out, LRT is among the most important players in the team. Think for a minute about who would be ready to go to replace him if he went down, and his importance becomes quickly apparent. The Lions game in a fortnight will give us a pretty good idea of where we're at, with two big forwards that will need to be contained. Happily, along with others here, I reckon we're travelling very nicely and have a better than even chance of knocking them off - if LRT can quell Browny or Fev it will go a long way to racking up a win.
Assuming the eagles are dealt with, if the boys can win 2 out of the next five (and hopefully more - they are entitled to believe they are a chance in all of them) the season will be set up beautifully.Comment

Thanks!
I know of two people - one a friend and the other a crows fan who runs our tipping comp (and haven't I been giving him some stick, woo hoo!) who almost foam at the mouth at the mention of LRT. Completely unfair, but then, Milne has a similar effect on me I guess! Key difference being that Milne is very deserving of disdain!Comment

LRT is one of those unique players where perceptions and reality just don't match up the way they should. He inspires much angst for the obvious clangers - which due to being fullback, will generally be punished much more heavily by opponents than errors which other players make elsewhere on the ground. For those with long enough memories, Dale Lewis used to cop a lot of criticism for how he looked as he went about his business (he too just seemed to lope around throwing out some really awful clangers - "ohhhh Daaaale" used to be heard quite a lot in our part of the O'Reilly!) but his career was one to be proud of and he had a big hand in our successes of that period. Ed Barlow suffers a bit from perceptions too, but still has a bit more to prove to be in the two Lewies class!
