What was the story with that padding? It really looked like the only thing it would protect was not getting bruised too badly, I assume that wasn't the lingering injury!
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time

I believe he has made mention in the past that he thought he was prone to corked theighs after a series of incidents, and wore the cricket pads in defense. I guess it's one of those times that after you wear the strapping for a little while you feel naked without it.

He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

... both thighs!!! (and was still defending like a champion.)
Wild speculation, unsubstantiated rumours, silly jokes and opposition delight in another's failures is what makes an internet forum fun.

It looked worse in those days as well becasue the football shorts were not as big, and then he had those big red bike shorts going halfway down his leg to cover the padding (I think there was some rule at the time about what colours players had to wear in order to match their uniforms).

When he retired, they were donated to a local orphanage and now provide bedding for two kiddies cots.

Dont' forget Braddy. Wtf is that?

                          Braddles seems much more appropriate.

During my Roy period in 89 he was part of a great Fitzroy spine - Pert, Roos, Matty Armstrong, Lynch, Osborne.

                                The 3-year plan:
                                1. 2003: Attack
                                2. 2004: Defence
                                3. 2005: Attack + Defence = Flag

Plus the GF speech, the hair, being the best-looking coach, smiling & whistling during huddles of tight games, coaching from the sideline with the NFL-style headset, the list is actually quite numerous.

What a depressing thread. I miss him already!
