What's the plan for Daniel Currie?

We took him late in the 06 draft as a bottom-aged prospect who had very good potential. I heard at the time he would of been a first rounder in the following year's draft.

With Seaby going down I though it may of been the time for Currie to make his debut but all the talk has been about either bringing Pyke in or playing White in the ruck. I'm not sure where Currie is going to get his chance. The two ruckmen at the top of the pecking order are both still pretty young, and Pyke seems to be ahead of Currie.

I have heard he has great hands so perhaps a key forward role is a possibility. Does he have the mobility? If a key forward role is the go then he is going to have to wait another couple of years which I can't see happening.

Currie is apparently smart, has great hands & has the potential to be a good ruckman, but he lacks confidence/mongrel & is not a fantastic kick for goal [the Reserves watchers can be the ultimate judge of this].

If Pyke is elevated & selected this weekend, it?s not looking good for Crusher as a senior ruckman in the medium term.

So at the end of the year, he may become trade bait, retained for depth/further improvement [Hawthorn's bad run with rucks this year is terrifying] or refashioned into a KPP.

When the club decides to consider his future, I reckon the following points will come into play:

• Seaby & Mumford are <26 & set for a long spell as #1 & #2 rucks.
• Pyke has a mature body & now has an opportunity to establish himself as a credible senior ruck/defender
• In his age group, Grundy, White, Johnston & Reid are making progress as KPPs
• Project Orreal has progressed but he has back problems & his contract runs out this year.
• Currie comes out of contract soon.

I think Currie will be a good player. This is his first injury free year and he needs time to mature

He's 96Kg and not strong enough yet for AFL Rucks take longer and I don't expect him to really put pressure until 2012, only playing 10 - 12 games until then

Agree.

The general consensus is that ruckmen start later (21-23) and finish later (31-33), so there is no rush - he'll get his chance.

Sounds like they want to go with Pyke first seeing as he's in good form. I'm hoping Currie will still get a game this year, preferably just after we play Freo in a few weeks. Imagine playing your first game in ruck against Sandilands!

It's almost August, still no Seaby, we've seen more of Pykey but still no love for a Currie debut

Only 1 fluff article for the year and a (recurring?) foot injury is not a good sign.

No point in speculating about his future at this point as he will be given at least 5 years on the senior list (as he should) before having to produce and they wouldn't even expect him to be playing senior football until late next year.

If it happens earlier then good luck to the boy, but there is no rush with him.

Looking through the list there are quite a few out of contract at the end of this year. It would be nice if we could get D Hannebury and K Jack signed again ASAP. and of course another contract for Mr Pyke if you please.....

Currie will probably be delisted along with Orreal and perhaps unjustly. Seaby/Mumford/Pyke can pretty much play lone ruckman if 2 of those are injured next season. We have invested a lot of energy in him, but i think he has enough time in him to snag a spot as a 2nd ruck in GWS when they come along. Orreal wont make it, but Currie probably will but not with us. Barlow might also need to start looking at his options, he might end up turning around like kepler bradley this season. We need a ruck/fwd this draft to plug as no.4 reserve, along with another key backman to cover for craig bolton when he retires or incase reid isnt any good. so i think currie will be gone this season or next.

With Playford gone we are already one down in talls. If anyone is going to go at the end of the year I think it's more likely to be poor Jake Orreal.

My worry about Currie is he is a bit Barlow-like. He seems to have everything that a league footballer needs except confidence.

I hope we hang on to Currie. He played NAB cup and took a couple of nice marks in the goal square against Carlton as I recall.
