really i just thought some of their players were down, pav was shut down in the 2nd half, barlow was quiet and so was sandilands. They had a few out, they can play a lot better. If they kicked straighter would of been a flogging. I just thought they had a lot more upside than us left out there and as you say we had more good than bad players and still got done easily.

We def. didn't play our best (to be kind) - but really, the umpiring. Jeez. I wonder if Roos just needs to knuckle under and deliver the bags of unmarked bills to the umps' secret address in Mordor so we have a chance to play against just one team on the field the rest of the season, as opposed to team x AND the umps.
I thought - after a grumbling start (on my part) that Bevan did better as the game went on. And I love Jetta, but it seems to be - he gets the ball, is very flashy and we all go "ooh" ... and then he kicks it directly to an opposing player, or nowhere in particular, or something. Yes, he has immense promise, but I'm starting to worry about getting him up to that next elite level where we all can see he belongs.
I thought Rohan did really REALLY well, throwing himself into everything and charging full steam ahead etc etc.
Watching Braddie limp off, sit talking on the bench whilst gesturing at his knee, and then waddling around rainsoaked in a red robe, was v.v. worrisome. That made my spirits sink for sure.
If this was a "must win" game, I fret about the rest of the season. I'm going down to Melbourne next week for my first pilgrimage to the MCG! If we struggle against the Hawks, I'm gonna need prozac.Comment

Second week in a row where I have wanted to commit umpirocide (if thats a word) It will be in the Oxford dictionary (and I'll be in the news....and then jail) if the same thing happens next week.
Look on the playing group. Injuries could well bury us into bottom 8 relegation the way things are going. The upside of that is we are probably going to see the kids (Vesz, MOD, Currie TDL) that everyone has been asking for for several weeks. Mumford will be a big in next week for us, and I reckon Canuck has learnt more about the game in the last fortnight than most imports do in a season. So he will improve a lot. Looks like a very fit man, hasnt yet realised that you have to tap, tackle then RUN, but that will come.
On today couple of things:
Jack is rapidly working towards A grader, his clangers are drying up and his decision making is improving all the time. A goal kicking midfielder with class. I also think Rohan is destined to be anything, he looks fantastic. Hannes is there - very good, doesnt look the boy anymore. Im starting to get he and ROK mixed up so that says something.
Eski was very good today. Missed his #17 mate and tried to do the work for both. Shaw looked like a hack today, to busy looking for attitude than doing the things a "senior" (self-proclaimed last week) player should do. LRT, you cant bag him this year, we would be stuffed without him - he is pretty solid every week atm. Grundy got Pavliched early... thats a hard gig, the man is gifted.
Goodes was just punishing today, he gets a rough ride these days from the umps (so much for protected species) but he also tries to do everything when the structure is falling apart, which contributes more to the structure falling apart....
The guts just dont look right, but I think we arent far away from a good combination in there. Smith, Hannes with Macca, Jude and Kirky...those blokes need to sort it out with a fit Pebbles and get things rolling.
Outs for me other than the injuries to Bradshaw and Kennelly; Bevan = hack heading for delist (sad when your best is moderate and its now gone) Playfair = slow tall, can kick a goal if the angle is favourable.
Bring on Clarkos ex-cluster of sewerage!!!!"We talked five times. I called him twice, and he called me twice."   :D

I thought it was a rubbish performance. Yes we came back into it in the second half but Freo never looked troubled.
Our skills and any semblance of a game plan have disappeared in the last few weeks. In our case, injuries are a valid excuse but our senior players are down across the board. There doesn't appear to be any leadership out on the ground.
Jack, Hanners and Rohan were really good. Gaz is starting to get a feel for it and could really finish off the season strongly.
I don't know how anyone can accuse Malceski of being a of a soft player after today. He was throwing himself into marking contests today and did really well.
Goodes had another of his shockers. When he is down he can be awful and today was one of those days. I am surprised he got so many touches, it didn't seem like it at the ground though his 48% efficiency explains a bit.
I love Kirky but he could really limp to the end. He's struggling - no clearances today and he seemed to be used mainly as a forward. Will he keep demanding a place on form?
Bevan may not be back. He was OK when used as a defender, but is useless as a forward.
Jetta's 3rd quarter was scintillating but he's a frustrating and lazy player. He's either playing to instruction or doesn't know how to use his pace and how to inject himself. I'd be sending him back to the reserves to tear it up there for a while to prove to himself what he's capable of.
Pyke and Playfair didn't do much for me. We have enough average players as it is, neither are going to get much better we should be looking to the future as we'll struggle to make teh 8 as it is. Johnston as a forward and Currie in the ruck are better options for us long term."As everyone knows our style of football is defensive and unattractive, and as such I have completely forgotten how to mark or kick over the years" - Brett Kirk

I think he's reverted to playing predominantly tagging roles this year. Believe he was on Barlow today and kept him pretty quiet.Comment

Just back from the Rising Sun. Lunch was great, pity about the after-dinner course.
People bagging LRT can go jump; he was close to our BOG today, and was the main reason the Big Pav was quieter in the second half. Gutsy, hard-working player. Reg had a hard gig to start with (the same Pav) but did better later in the game. Nick Smith was v. good, and I thought Shaw was OK, a bit of run and not bad delivery on a day when even Hannebery, who had a good game, kicked out on the full. Malceski was very good, working hard, generally good kick. Didn't see a lot of Marty - who was he on? The debutant did quite well, I'll be happy to have him back.
I agree with those who said the midfield, apart from Jack, was the problem. I expected Kirk to impose himself on the game, and while he did some good things, he was not a dominant force. Jude worked hard as ever but apart from some good tackles did not have much of an impact. Freo outdid us at our own game and were excellent in the stoppages and getting the contested ball into space.
The forward set-up was a problem, despite the good efforts of Playfair and Bradshaw while he was on ground. Once he went off and Tadhg went down we were stuffed. You're not going to win with a two man bench. Jetta was in and out, but we need to persist with him; no goals again, but despite what an earlier poster said, his delivery was generally good. It will happen soon.
Considering who he was up against, Mike Pyke was a decent competent ruckman and I'm glad we had the forethought/sheer luck to pick him up. If he hadn't been there heaven knows what would have happened, and I'm relieved he'll be there to back up Mummy next week. He wasn't bad around the ground either.
The umpiring was diabolical, I think as bad as I have seen - see others' comments about Goodes (who was up and down), Playfair and Rohan. We lost to a better team, but the difference was magnified by the contribution of the men in yellow. He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. We are just playing a very conservative style of play, which at best will see us compete for a 1/2 a qrt against the good sides and win by a few goals to the @@@@tier sides. Roos knows the depth and the injuries are hurting us and rather see the team being blown out richmond style by trying to play attacking footy he is doing us a favour by playing a defensive dour game. I am just glad we are not seeing 70+ thrashing each week, cause the side currently is very capable of that.
Hence why Roosy was relaxed last week after the siren went. He is a realist and knows we wouldnt match up at all against the dogs and i guess this week against the dockers. We just have to ride this current period of injuries out and hopefully once we get both ruckmen back, mcglyn (without him IMHO we wouldnt have been as good in the first few weeks heck we could be sitting at 1 win many lossses) tadgh gets sorted out and bradshaw is injury free we will do ok.
I would love us to be top 4 atm but the reality is and we all know this we are only a top 6-8 AT best.Comment

Apparently some moron journalist asked Mark Harvey in the pst match press conference about whether Michael Johnson was addicted to cocaine. Harvey didn't answer. Then the journalist asked the same question again, so Harvey walked out of the press conference. Go to the Freo board of BF if you want to know more.Comment

The thing I love about supporting the swans? They have a crack. Having the pleasure (?) of sitting at ground level you get to appreciate how tough the conditions were and how brilliantly the youngsters stood up today. A couple of weeks ago I posted that this was the time that we would see what our young kids were made of. Do you know what swannie fans? They are made of good stuff. As Liz said, Rohan got outplayed and outmuscled again and again but he kept at it and never dropped his head. Dan Hannebery is just about the most exciting 1st/2nd year player we have ever had. To watch him, this tiny youngster, going around our forward line in Q3 encouraging the boys, patting them on the back and geeing them up - this kid is something special.
Nick Smith is fantabulous. COMMITMENT.
I will admit to being a bit down on Jetta prior to today but his efforts were excellent in the 2nd half. You can see that his is a player that needs responsibility (bit like Goodes). He really seemed to take a breath and attack he ball with some real belief and drive. This was a break out game for him. He is going to get a lot of confidence and belief and when the boys watch the highlights he will feature highly.
Just to throw a bucket of water on things, I think we need to rethink our forward line and our rebound. I got the impression from Berbakov at the post match that Bradshaw/Tadhg injuries aren't great.
Shaw was good today, showed a lot of passion and leadership. Liked Marty Sschmarty went to a party.
Reggie needs to get tough. He got muscled by Baz and by Paz - needs to knit those eyebrows together and get a bit cranky.Comment

The first half today was hopeless and I don't need to repeat things except Goodes had a shocker and OKeefe is seriously not right.
Playfair leading goal kicker. Did what he was meant to do.
After Tadgh came off, he was on his back for a while and didn't seem to be in too much pain as best as I could tell through the binoculars from the Brewongle. Try saying that quickly after a few drinks. He got up and did a few laps of the boundary and was running freely. I was surprised that he didn't come back on but obviously must not have felt right to him.
Listening to MMM and Luffy said that Sandilands had 35 hit-outs with 9 posessions and Pyke had 21 hit-outs with 7 posessions. Pyke blocked up Sandilands space and did a good job. Considering today was his 9th or 10th game, I think he did an outstanding job.
We had as many inside 50's as them but failed to convert or take any advantage of that.
It was fantastic to watch the younger players try to lift to win today. They will all be outstanding as their skills improve.
My hi-lite was Jacks tackle on Sandilands in the 3rd qtr. Brought him down like a felled tree.
Bradshaw was hobbling for a while before he came off. The Swans were pushed to the boundaries as the magpies do to us and he had a day where he had to do alot of hard runs wide to the boundary. So it's no wonder his knee got aggrevated. He will probably be out for 3 weeks if not more. I hope they bring in TDL or L J for him.
The Dockers even brought their mascot who looked like a cartoon Warwick Capper.
If Kirk's retirement announcement was an attempt to motivate the team, didn't work on the oldies.
Perhaps we should throw the team into the pure waters of Tasmania. In memory of my little Staffy - Dicey, 17.06.2005 to 1.12.2011- I'll miss you mate.Comment
