    Sydney Swans and the umpires

    Hi all

Long time lurking and i thought i would finally sign up today after yet another frustrating game ruined by pretty bad umpiring.

Sorry for the long posts but i need to rant.

Yes I know we were outclassed by a better team and we shouldn't blame the umps, thats a noble thing to do according to the victorians, fair enough..BUT..

    Enough is enough!

I am continually getting frustrated at the way the umpiring is occurring in the AFL. Every week we seemed to be giving away frees at the wrong postion for us and the right one for the opposition team and most times it's from either a very technical and inconstant decision or from an obvious umpire error. Every week it's the same scenario which leads to a few factors. Let me try and articulate them..

The umpires always seem to set the standard of the way they will offciate against us very early in the game. If the opposing team attacks from the onset a free seems to be always given to them in front of goal, this sets a precedent in our defenders minds where they think twice about going in hard for the pill or for a defender to beat a forward..so our players tend to then slack off and we get exposed.

Usually a run of say 3 goals takes the wind out of our sails and deflates moral in the team.

Then the umpires decide they need to influence the game a bit more by paying us frees in rather non threatening positions around the ground. Usually around half back flanks. This seems to be the "levelling up period" which occurs during an AFL game and is the most frustrating aspect, because by the time the evening up occurs the game is lost or we are too far behind to mount a decent comeback and when we do we have to not only beat our opponents but also have our minds on what the umps will pay.

Sure we get some favourable frees sometimes, but by that stage we are either way ahead and won the game, so it doesn't really matter or we are on our way to a flogging. It's like the umps are taking the piss!

Now i love the code but it's leaving me with a rather bitter taste in my mouth. I didn't watch the game today due to commitments but i did mention to the partner that the umps will have a say in the way we play the game today and the swans mindset. Reading comments on a few forums how right i was! Sure the umps didn't LOSE us the game but they did influence it at the time when things were balanced.

Just like when we play Geelong at skilled or with the dogs. (It always seems to be against a vic side, today was a strange one. But the afl in their corrupt minds wants to see freo finally play some finals, not win the flag, but some finals footy..god i love AFL conspiracies its just so easy!)

Now my question, is there anyway this can be addressed at all? Or should i just suck it up and deal with it like i have been told many times by victorians? If this is the case i am giving it away, as i watch a sport or a game so it can played fairly and evenly, sure umps are humans and make mistakes but not the amount of consistent f ups we see by afl umps is baffling!

Which leads me to think about conspiracies and the one about the AFL engineering the code and results by instructing umps through their yes man geishan how to officiate a certain game each week. Every game is inconstant and rules applied to certain teams which are over looked when another game is played. I dont know what to think!

See mumford case and how vic based players were never reported for a similar incidents to back up my theory!

Sorry for the long rant but i have just had enough of umpiring in Australian Rules Football!

Umpiring is ridiculously inconsistent. However most of the time both sides cop a fair amount of rubbish decisions. How Geoff Gieschen still has his job is amazing.

Yeah it's more the inconsistency that kills me, I can handle anything (within reason) as long as both sides cop it. Today was average umpiring both ways (more so to us lol).

The one thing that annoys me, and maybe it's just me being really biased, but Sydney doesn't seem to get home crowd free kicks. When I watch WC, Ad, Collingwood, Essendon et al, I feel like they are able to, um not influence, but almost draw attention to certain things? (hope that makes sense!). I have always felt that the Swans crowd has never been respected in that sense, but like I said, may well just be me sooking.

I'm completely over the last quarter square up. It's embarrassing! They always pay us frees coming off our defensive line in the last quarter, I'm sure just to even up the tally! Maggots!

Someone please tell me I am imagining this?

Thats becasue there is this silly misconception in melbourne that sydneysiders dont know the game at all, it still happens. So IMHO the umpires are not worried or intimidated by a home crowd. It's a perception which is still strong in melbourne, they want sydneysiders to embrace the game yet they (sydney fans) show any knowledge and they are ridiculed. This trickles all the way down.

Nope. I always make sure i state this fact when some idiot informs me about the free kick count. Sure it may be 23-21 their way..but have a look where their frees were paid, what part of the game it was and when we are paid our frees.

At the end of Q1 the free kicks were Sydney 8 Freo 9 - 17 Free kicks in a qtr of footy?
The number of free kicks being paid in games is ridiculous.

Apologies to anyone sitting near me today. I see red when the Swans are denied free kicks that the other mob seem to be able get at anytime. Also the HTB interpretation today was as bad as I've seen it EVER. We've lost the plot in this game when we penalise the only player going for the ball because he has the temerity of falling on it or pulling it in. Here's a novel approach you idiots REWARD THE PLAYER GOING FOR THE BALL.

The team had a poor performance today but many umpiring decisions didn't help them at all. They got alot of boos at the ground.

Maybe I'm too one eyed but I'm certain that with fairer officiating in that 3rd qtr when we were making a run I'm sure we would have gone into the last qtr a lot closer than we were. Having said that it wasn't @@@@ umpiring that caused us to play so crap in the 1st half.

It was a deplorable display by the umpires todays, particulaly number 27 Michael Avon. It all started in the first quarter when Shaw got pinged for holding the ball after absolutely NO prior opportunity.

The big issue too is not the number of free kicks it is also where you get them. Freo got at least 4 goals that I can recall as a result of free kicks, I don't think we got any.

The bloody umps also no doubt try to even the count late in a game in junk time. At the 8 minute mark of the last quarter we were down by about 26 points. I said to my mate next to me to wait until the 20 minute mark and if the margin is the same we will start getting cheap free kicks to even things up. It started at 19:54 in the last quarter!

In short, the umpiring was DISCRACEFUL!
                          Swannies for life!

Seriously why is there this mindset that we should just accept it and deal with it? (not in this thread but by many non swans supporters)

                            It's blatant cheating.

You don't square up a free kick tally just so the free kick stats at the end of the game can look even. Gee the AFL are a grade bastards.

KS, ROK was slam tackled by a Brisbane player.

Today watching on TV most decisions both ways were there. It are the ones that get missed that irk me.

Kennedy gets pinged for HTB in a standing tackle when the replay showed he had no prior opportunity. After that there were at least 6 the same or even more blatant where Freo were caught in standing tackles but none were paid.

2 deliberate OOB against Freo not paid. Duffield's was disgraceful.

Gary Rohan was hit head high and front on by Crowley and no free was given about 30 out from goal. Crowley will probably get cited by the MRP. Ball goes up the ground and Crowley kicks the goal.

3 slapping of the arms to Goodes in the first Q. Pavlich gets a little touch and it is paid.
