Anyone going to the "Legends Lunch" in Melbourne for Mick, Leo & Crouchy today. Would love to know how it went.

We (mrs d and I) had a great time. Each of the three was interviewed by Grubby, preceded by a highlights reel. Loud cheers again for Mickey O giving it to the West Coast Cheer Squad. Also for Leo and THAT mark (the place went berserk). Laughs and cheers for Jared, and as far as I could tell, not one shot of him playing on Aker! (very disappointing) Then the three sat together and had a chat with Matty Nicks. Very funny and at times quite touching; you get a sense of the strength of the bond that develops for one-club men over such a long football life.
Very emotional speech (for the listeners, and it was delivered in direct and forceful terms) from Bobby Skilton, giving people an idea of what it meant to him to play for a club that wasn't respected and then to share in the premiership celebrations and know that respect had been gained. Standing ovation and the roof nearly fell in.
Entertainment was clever, a bloke (one of the Coodabeens, sorry I didn't get his name) who'd made up new words for the respective club songs. Mrs d sat next to another couple, he a Collingwood supporter (who joined in the standing ovations), she a Swan, who have double memberships. I think of this kind of thing as football's contribution to the civilized life. Next to me was a 30 something bloke from Adelaide who moved to Melbourne and became hooked on Paul Kelly, and that settled it.
The food was good - fancy chicken - and a choice of three wines. Crown stubbies were delivered to the tables in buckets. I was amazed at what some people put away. All in all a very enjoyable afternoon.Last edited by dimelb; 28 May 2010, 11:27 PM.He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. And mostly fans from, dare I say it, Victoria. You know that horrible bunch who think people from other states don't have a clue. For all that a certain poster thinks about Vic fans, these turns have one thing going for them; CULTURE. It sounds like the same vibe as the Legends Night last year.I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his timeComment

We don't get to see the team much these days except on tv but at Etihad against the Roos over half the croud were clearly swans !
Expect a big turnout on Sunday at the G.

Oh my, you got a dose of Matty Nicks, my gorgeous "godson" (God I wish he was my son!). I love/ed Matty, he is gorgeous, and he loves MickyO, and it shows, and they are both very funny men. All good quality. Sounds like a top afternoon. Envy ....If you've never jumped from one couch to the other to save yourself from lava then you didn't have a childhoodComment
