    Coin toss facts

Does anybody know what kind of coin is used for the coin toss at the start of the game? I'm serious...

One made from some kind of metal, one side with a head, the other with some kind of other design?

    I'm on the Chandwagon!!!

If you cannot compete for the premiership, it's better to be young and exciting than middle-aged and dowdy.

I'm working on it Kirkari. I've sent off an email to a currnet grade umpire and will advise when I hear back.

Cheeky, accurate, but ultimately unhelpful. ;-)

This is the response I got from a current grade umpire who has also umpired at AFL level......

The coin we use varies from game to game depending on who is at the game and who supplies it. Some goalies have a sentimenal coin at AFL level, others use a 50 c or 20 c piece - it makes no real difference. I'm sure during AFL finals they may have a coin supplied by the AFL but nothing says what we have to use.

I have a pocket in my shorts for spare whistle and another pocket for reporting notebook and I put coin in there after toss if goalies gone to their spots.

The visiting Captain gets the call.

When I asked have they ever been stuck without a coin the response was.....

Never, I always carry a coin in my pocket - just in case. If I was without a coin, then I have a whistle and it would be which hand is the whistle in behind the back - an oldie but a goodie.

Opening this thread, I was expecting some in depth statistical analysis of whether it makes a difference to winning the game or not ...

Not sure if I'm disappointed or pleasantly surprised to learn otherwise ...

I reckon rock, paper scissors would beat the which hand holds the whistle approach - Kirky could use a bit of zen and esp to know in advance what the other guy was going to choose!

I reckon they should Roshambo for it.
..And the Swans are the Premiers...The Ultimate Team...The Ultimate Warriors. They have overcome the highly fancied Hawks in brilliant style. Sydney the 2012 Premiers - Gerard Whately ABC

Probably not politically correct to flip a midget. They could always toss an Auskicker.
