Mark Williams: loss to Swans all part of plan

    AFL
Sydney loss all part of fiendish plan: Williams
    by STAFF REPORTERS

"Just another part of Williams' plan"
Port Adelaide's finals defeat against Sydney was not devastating, but rather a fiendish step in the club's elaborate long-term plan, coach Mark Williams confirmed yesterday.

"Yesss, all is as it should be," Williams said at a post-match press conference on Sunday, rubbing his hands together and cackling. "Let them use the words 'rabbits' and 'headlights' and 'chokers'. That's what we want them to think."

Williams explained the Power intended to build a reputation as a fair-weather team vulnerable to real pressure, then strike when their opponents least expected. He would not confirm when that time would be.

"Lots of clubs play mind games - resting key players, playing poorly in meaningless matches and so on," Williams said. "The idea is to trick the opposition into underestimating you. The clever part is to then drill home that deception by blowing a seemingly crucial match."

"It's not so much about creating a false sense of security, as fully justifying that security with a series of inept, embarrassing performances."

Williams said Port's real battles lay ahead, possibly far, far ahead. He hinted Power fans could expect one more disastrous result this season, before the next 'rebound' stage of his intricate plan in 2004. He said when that happened he anticipated a further barrage of criticism from those eager to write his team off.

"The fools! The fools!" he said. "Let them write their worst."

In related news, a press conference at which Richmond coach Danny Frawley claimed to be replicating Williams' plan was cancelled after journalists were too busy laughing to ask questions.
