    Effort

Yesterday the team discovered that playing with lots of effort can produce and unexpected win. It's gone full circle from the lazy Swans that Eade coached at the end of his time in Sydney through the Swans that would fight to the very end, no matter the score, - that has marked most of the Roos era.

Everyone here says we should do something differently. I'd say we should just mark each player on his effort, not skill or luck or whatever. That working for each other turned us from a lazy team to Premiers - and took the Cats from an inept team to near legends. If you just look at effort I think the team would look quite different. Obviously Jude would be at the top of the list and Mummy and LRT and Reg. I think Tiger and Mal would be looking dodgy but Shaw would be safe. So would Kirk.

Adam? Do you judge him as a normal player in which case he was okay yesterday or as a skilled player who was awful and cruising. Few would be comparing him with Judd or Gaz these days. If we wanted lazy skillful players we could have gone for Fev. Bring back Rohan as the kid really tries - and tell Jet to go and run and have fun (the way Roos told the whole team when he first started). McGlynn and Kennedy have both been good for us. ROK has been pretty good. Pyke and TDL should be told their errors will be forgiven as long as they make the effort and have enthusiasm.

The Swans used to win because they battled and played for each other. If they have stopped listening to the coach and he's stopped caring then maybe he should go back up to the box where his body language isn't a hindrance to the team. Bagging Roos whole career because he seems to have lost the faith of the team is as unfair as judging Kirk or Kelly on their final year in the team. But I'd like to see something new and that's saying "play hard, have fun and the only thing that will have you dropped is if you look like you'd rather be somewhere else'>

The sad thing about yesterday's game was that the Tigers played the way the Swans used to play. And the Swans played the way the tired teams that we unexpectedly beat used to play.

+1 - especially the last para.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

So only two agree with me. Or is On the Couch right and mid-level teams are just more hurt by a few injuries?

I think it's a different way of thinking but definitely one that has merit. Effort and desire can be the extra few % to lift an average team to victory over a good team (or a poor team over a middle of the road team).

          I'm on the Chandwagon!!!

If you cannot compete for the premiership, it's better to be young and exciting than middle-aged and dowdy.

I agree that our effort and drive are definitely down. To see tigers players bust through multiple swans tacklers is most definitely not the way we have played our football in the past and to me was the most dissapointing part of the last quarter effort.

It is true though that we just cant suffer the injury problems of the top teams and come through unscathed. Not only have we lost a spine of bolton, seaby and bradshaw from our best 22 but we have only just got back a partly injured Kenneally, Shaw and Moore. Add in that White is having second year blues at full forward, Goodes struggling and our next gen midfielders not stepping quite up to the highest level and it means that we are definitely not going to challenge the better teams (and some of the not so better teams ) on our day.

With Kirk fading we don;t seem to be able to lift as much when challenged. We have lost a fair bit of experience and leadership that used to spark us and get us over the line. Even in our great years, we seldom buried teams but won a lot of tight games

You can't argue with the brains trust on On the Couch. I'm blaming the Swans for poor Benny's ills. If they hadn't allowed such a euphoric inspiring win then he may not have ended up in hospital.

No fear of the Swans playing on caffeine on Sunday. Must have given each player a chamomile tea transfusion at half time. Either that or they got their caffeine tablets mixed up with valerian.

Kennelly reckons he only needs a couple of red wines to fall asleep. Maybe he and a few others had same for lunch.
