Seaby vs Pyke

And you'd not be unhappy if he left anyway?
Agree Seaby then was ahead of Mummy then. But Mummy has improved - is Seaby still better?Comment

I am probably guilty of under-rating Pyke as much as many on RWO are guilty of over-rating him.
He's probably somewhere in between but there's no way he's better than Seaby.
I still don't think he's anything other than cover for our first choice ruckmen and my main concern is that he had held up the development of Currie.Last edited by hammo; 7 July 2010, 01:59 PM."As everyone knows our style of football is defensive and unattractive, and as such I have completely forgotten how to mark or kick over the years" - Brett Kirk

I feel sorry for Seaby. The guy left West Coast because he couldn't crack a game, plays a couple of blinders and then snaps an ankle. In his absence everyone is smitten about the underdog Canadian (including me) who continues to make great strides in the game to the point that Seaby might struggle to get a game in the ruck at his new home.
Given it was a serious injury I think it pragmatic to be careful returning Seaby to the 22 this year, especially if there is no great reward (read: top 4) to be had. If Seaby returns to his stellar form at the start of the year it's no question he gets picked before Pyke, but given that CBolts and Playfair are aging and injured respectively, Pyke may find himself in the side anyway.Last edited by laughingnome; 7 July 2010, 04:05 PM.10100111001 ;-)Comment

Was Seaby generally played as a ruck at West Coast, or was he more of forward/Ruck? If they do want to bring him back this year, perhaps they could bring him into our horror show of a forward line and see how he goes there. Particluarly if Bradshaw is finished for the yearComment

Pyke has improved a fair bit but he would still be in the worst dozen players in the league and if you listen to most Melbourne commentators he would be the worst. I doubt whether a VFL team would even look at picking him up if he was delisted.Comment

Seaby is a ruckman he does not have the pace or agility to play as a permanent forward. In days where many teams are playing 1 ruckman it would be ludicrous to play 3.
Seaby is in front of pyke by a country mile. When he comes back play mummy 70% of the game in the ruck and Seaby 30% ruck and 30% forward. Leaving pyke as the backupComment

That doesn't make Pyke special. Listening to Melbourne commentators I think they'd pick any 12 Swans players as the worst 12 in the comp. Except for Goodes who has won some awards in Melbourne so he's "the champ".Comment

Ask a 1930's coach what he thinks of modern day paddocks, zones, flooding, waves & clusters etc etc.
If you don't evolve, you're pretty much screwed.
In 2010, you work within the system with the resources on hand and you need to innovate & do the unexpected to give you an edge.
As crazy as it sounds (yes I admit to drinking far too much coffee today), but if Horse can find a way to deploy 3-4 mobile/versatile rucks to cover our deficiencies in KPPs (I'm sorry, how many I50 contested marks do we have for the year?) & pace so we can move the ball like lightning I50 then I say go for goldThe Swans Fan Zone on

Seaby and Mumford deserve to be 1-2, however, I think Pyke is well worth persevering with. The improvement has shown no signs of slowing yet and he is getting better around the ground with every game. Like the idea of Seaby resting up forward sometimes. I remember a few West Coast games when he P...ed me off with quality stints in the forward line that got them quick goals.Comment

i honestly dont think any other club would ever take pykeTheres not much left to sayComment

He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)Comment

Seaby by a country mile (I had to look twice at this thread to be honest, I thought it was taking the piss), although the future is looking a hell of a lot brighter for Pyke and his AFL career.
Still don't think his awareness is good enough to be in a full strength Swans team aiming for the finals (although this has improved greatly), but if we get knocked about in the next few weeks and finals hopes become a distant memory, I'd keep him in for the rest of the year.Comment

No chance. So he's taken one mark in the goal square in a dozen odd games and kicked an unmarked goal. Keep it in perspective. It doesn't make him the next Dean Cox."As everyone knows our style of football is defensive and unattractive, and as such I have completely forgotten how to mark or kick over the years" - Brett Kirk
