Seaby vs Pyke

Isn't it a treat to watch? His tackling yesterday was superb, obviously taking a leaf from Mummy. Really starting to turn into one of the better second rucks going around.

Pyke by today's performance, Mumford/Pyke has much more chemistry during gameday than Seaby/Mumford. Pyke is also showing enough promise to rotate through the wing when someone other than mummy is pinch hitting, which is a valuable asset in the modern game. seaby pretty much plonks in the forward line which is old school, especially since rotations are becoming more important in our game style.

shouldnt forget how good the seaby mumford combo was looking before the injury though, i think it would be a great partnership if they hadnt of missed all these games as a combo

Yep definitely. The Candadian is fast becoming a favourite of mine ( and I'm sure many of you also) . He sticks those marks so well, that with his tapwork, and now the tackling too........... I know we say it every week but he's improving out of sight each time he takes the field, and it's exciting

Last post in the thread was round 16 - 8 senior games since. Seemed to finish well, but under the light of day will only be a depth player.

Too early to predict what will happen during another pre-season, but as it stands now, a fully fit Seaby would still be well ahead of an, albeit improving, Mike Pyke

Agree, my sentiments are with Pyke though because of his incredible development so quickly. I thought he was towelled up in the second half against the dogs though.Can't remember winning one centre clearance without Mumford. He needs to improve just as much again to get a game over Seaby or Mumford

I can't remember the figures, he did win a few, but was down in his hit-to-advantage percentage. The Doggies did better.
I think next season he should be played more in other positions - resting forward, tall defender are the obvious ones - to expand his repertoire.

Seaby said in his "Post season wrap" he will be focussing on playing up forward a bit more next year. I think he would be a pretty reasonable CHF, similar role to L Brown at the pies. It would have the added attraction of releasing Goodsy to play wherever he wants. Playfair did OK in that role before his injury and Seaby is a far better player than Henry was. Pyke can then continue to develop as the 2nd ruckman.

Seaby is worth using up forward but Mike also might be worth a try, he has good pace, can take a mark and would not think twice about crashing packs to create a mess for players like TDL and McGlynn to take advantage of. When he actually has the confidence to kick it he is not a bad kick and getting better (I hope they work on this in the off season so the first option isn't necessarily always handpass). He also has great tackling ability that would maintain forward pressure. I think we have three good ruckman who are all a bit versatile in slightly different ways and it is an area that requires thought from the coaches over the off season and experimentation in the preseason games. I don't know how you include them all and I'm not sure if you should but the coaches should go in with an open mind and try to develop their abilities in other positions. Good problem to have.

To be fair to Seaby:

1. He was coming off a long term injury.
2. He has only been given a 20 odd min stint so far.

As with all players, you can only improve ny getting game time at the top level, there is no doubt Pyke has improved immensely, and with Seaby injured, as I understand it, he's definitely our best option and will continue to be. A fully fit Seaby, however, may offer a little more around the ground purely from experience point of view. If they continue to develop Pyke, I can see Seaby being traded at years end and keeping Currie in case of injury. We have to go with the young blokes, and no KPP? I think we have two in the side now in LJ and Reid, we just need White to stand up and be a FF. We can use LRT or Grundy at FB, put Jack in the centre with JPK and there's yr spine, if we ever get our best 21 on the park, we'll be difficult to beat, not that we aren't now

Unfortunately i see White as more of trade bait than Seaby....Seaby ahs been a noted Goal kicker and has good hands...Generally is consistant week to week...Which is Whites downfall.....
