Don't know that it is laziness per se, but Rohan does have an instinct for the tackle and kamikaze attack on the contest that Jetta doesn't have at the moment. Difference in build might be part of it but there are plenty of others with not too dsimilar builds to Jetta who are excellent tacklers - the likes of Dick, Carlton's Garlett, cousin Leroy. But those players have a year or more on Lewis in terms of time in the AFL system so we should be a little patient with Lewis for him to improve this aspect of his game. His technique already looks OK when he does run down and tackle.

      Right; Round 12, 2010, Reserves v Tuggeranong.

      11. Barlow; actually worked and didn't spectate; imo an improvement on the last time I saw him in action even though some of his disposal was not good. Tackles like a limpet though, giving instruction to C McKaigue, much more involved. Seemed to perhaps have rediscovered he likes playing footy. speculation of course. Forget to mention; he had work done on his hip/groin (lying in the mud, ick) so Larissa's report on this looks to be accurate and not a furfy as SOME intimated!

      13. Vezpremi; looks to be much stronger in his game; did some good work, spilled a few, kicked 2. Is he ready for seniors? Can't quite work this out. Yes and no is my answer.

      18. Jesse White: looks a monster at times, and even though he kicked 8 and took some towering marks, the words in my head were "one dimensional". Some great pack marks, but he was not playing on St Kilda was he. I don't want to appear churlish, and I do want to be encouraging, but .... he spills so many marks. ORB pointed out that he is not holding his hands effectively to be relieably taking marks. He needs some tutoring by Plugger. Or does he require contacts. He can take them at the top of a leap. Its the rest I worry about. I wonder if he thinks having a good ressies game is an automatic invitation back into seniors.....and if it is..... Note: forgot to mention that Jesse had no rest time, he was on the ground the whole game - wonder why.

      20. Reid; my little mate. Long build and looks stronger than earlier this year. He has the makings of a very good ruckman. Not sure I would encourage him to play without shinpads though. Thats a lot of shank that could get a hammering.

      22. Sumner; working harder.
      23. LJ; Lewis Johnston; has a great kicking action and displayed this while kicking 3. Almost looks like Nicksy in his technique. Noticed Stuey out on the ground at quarter time giving him practical instruction on body placement. Had a fantastic boundary line goal and a great mark.

      27. Kris Thornton was named but didn't play.
      28. Dill; Dylan McNeil; not as bouncy and evident as noted previously.

      32. Lewis Jetta; Still taking off like a hare, kicked 2 goals, one delivered by Jesse, which was fun to watch; smothered; appeared to have copped a boot in the groin and that slowed him down for a minute. His place kicking is top and bottom shelf. Perhaps he looks a bit lacksadasical because he is also having fun playing a game. It doesn't appear to worry him being in the 2s. A game is a game........Its all there, we will just have to wait a bit for the best of the best.

      35. Campbell Heath; Cambo; rolled his ankle in 2nd quarter, came back but wasn't great; finally left 4th quarter. Not his greatest game. Not surprised.
      35. Chris McKaigue; can bounce the ball on the run! On that surface! Better than some long time afl players! much more assured and the boys trust him to take their disposals. Still needs a lot more with his place kicking, takes a good mark. personal opinion, I think Crisso is a much better player than Skull (Brendan Murphy) got to be before he was injured and went back to Ireland - he appears to be having a lot more fun out there
      45. Nipper Gordon; my notes say "too many frees against". However he kicked a few goals, and also did some great stuff. Great mark, tackling improved a Lot, getting better all the time.
      46. Gilly Gilchrist; has put on a few inches up and a few inches across; getting better, but its taking time.

      Scholarship Players
      47. Jackson Potter; the hustler. I like him. Has a long way to go, but I don't think anxiety is going to be a problem; plays with self belief, even if not exactly skilful at this stage.
      48. Blake Guthrie; did some good things, is smart, tackles and can take a mark.
      49. Jack Lynch; was there.
      52. Mitch May; I am sure he has grown a good 10 inches since I last saw him. Wasn't setting the world on fire.

      Toppies;
      50. Eugene Kruger; he is good; a kid but he understands the game, he is smart, gets to the play and contributes with blocking etc even if not handling the ball; reminds me a little of Meredith. To my eye he is a natural....but saying that......
      51. Keiran Emery; kicked 2 and is working his butt off to be a better player; used to stay in a 20 meter arch (excuse me if I am exaggerating, but...) and had good hands; now he is getting up the ground and being more involved; he looks strong; took over the rucking to give Reid a rest. Wonder what will happen around draft time.
      53. Chris Bolt. I would love to see this bloke again; he is from Balmain Dockers, he is very tall and built like an AFL poster boy. Did some good things in defence. 2nd game.
      54. Mat Lemme;
      55. Gabe Robbie; first game; kicked a goal! not bad
      56. Ben Habbely; first game; was there.

Considering how close the first game this season was, i.e., they beat us in Canberra I was surprised at the score; 20.20.140 v 9.6.60.

No Gary Rohan, TDL, Meredith, Hanners, or Pyke and Curry.

Personal observation is that the pressure was on every quarter; and no quarter was given.

This sort of win gives even more credence to Frosty McPherson. He has turned himself into some sort of coach! Wouldn't be surprised to see him moved up to Seniors at the end of the year.

Thanks Primmy - absorbing detailed comments.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

Great summary Primmy. Gives just the overview of where each is up to that we love to learn. Thanks.

I for one wouldn't mind giving him a rookie spot at Sydney come draft time. West Coast don't get dibs on him this year, do they?

Spent a lot of time in the midfield as well. I kept a close eye on his off-the-ball game and he did a lot of chasing / pressuring, running to make a contest when we didn't have it and running to space when we had it. From this perspective it was an encouraging game. I find it hard to agree that fitness is the still the big issue Dew claims it is (as mentioned in another thread)

Sumner was one of the highlights for me. I thought he had a good game, is quick and looks very polished in his skills. And has a good leap and mark on him.

On Jetta, he looks a million bucks playing on lesser mortals but he'll never be afforded the same open spaces and come up against slower players as he did against Tuggaranong on Sunday. Still his pace is a great weapon at AFL level when he realises how to use it properly. I am just surprised the coaches haven't got it out of him yet.

This is an observation, during the kiddies day last Wednesday, the kids went for their autograph. My son had a new jumper without a signature. The first table he went to had Jude, Goodes and then Jetta. Jetta signed his name on the Opera house bit. He'll get there.

For you oldies, how does he compare to Jamie Lawson? I never actually saw him play. Wasn't Lawson a very quick midfielder as well?
Lawson was a VERY quick player...prob would beat Jetta by a lip over 40m..but smaller and lighter (if possible), and ridiculously brave. Dreadful end to his career with a shattered sesamoid..just as well he wasn't a racehorse.

Firstly thanks Primmy. They are awesome notes. It's so frustrating at the game not knowing the top ups. Some of those had a good day.
Of the above two; I really like Sam Reid. He is a very sure pair of hands and seems very composed on the field. Never appears in a flap no matter what the pressure.
Any idea what happened to McKaigue at the end? I turned around to see him on hands and knees with the trainer and seemed to be holding a rib or mid section? He seemed pretty at home in the conditions.

During the first quarter I sat very close to a group of three blokes (and a kid) who were barracking very vocally for Chris. So vocally that they had to be family. So I asked the one closest to me who proudly announced it was his son. He told me he is 18 years old (and confirmed he plays with Balmain). I asked him how tall Chris was and he said "nearly 7 ft". I suspect that was a slight exaggeration! But he is certainly a tall and strongly built lad who wasn't overawed out there and was at least a competent key defender.

At 18 yrs of age with a talking child, he has been good at something. That's right, linguistics.

Thanks to everyone who posted re the Reserves, especially Primmy - almost felt as though I had been there. Pleased that Sumner is getting noticed. Not a flashy player but solid, reliable and skilled and he seems to improve every game.

You know what! I am not exactly sure this is all that much of an exaggeration.....I mean he really stood out, and those shoulders! Looked comfortable I agree.
