Going to the polls on Gameday

As most of you are aware, the Swans play the Bulldogs in Season 2010 at a night game at the SCG on Federal Election day, 21st August. I am not sure that the Dog's number one ticket holder, (a certain Ms J Gillard), will be attending that night.

For those who are interested, (and I am sure that there are 1,000's), the last time the Swans played a game on a Federal Election day was 18th May 1974, when they hosted Melbourne at Lake Oval, winning 13-16(94) to 11.10(76). Coincidently, on 21st August 1943, they visited Glenferrie, to lose to host Hawthorn 7-14 (56) to 13-10 (88). Overall there have been 4 Federal Elections coinciding with a Swans gameday, with the current record 2 wins and 2 losses.

There has never been an occasion since 1982 when the Sydney Swans played on the same day as a New South Wales state election. (Although there were two weekends in 1991 and 1999 when they played the day after the election).

In Victoria until 1981, South played on 7 occasions the same day as a Victorian State Elections, with a 2 wins and 5 losses record. The last game was held in 5th May 1979, when South Melbourne lost to North Melbourne at Arden Street, winning 12-16(88) to 19-24(138). South's last win was on 30th May 1970 against Geelong 19-14 (128) to 10-18 (78). The only time the club has played the Bulldogs on an election day was 14th May 1932, when they beat Footscray 10-11(71) to 8-12(60).

Is this what you normally get up to a 4 in the morning?

That's great research top40, you really must have a lot of free time!! I love nothing more that election night parked in front of the teev downing some frothies (I know, I know, I need to get a life too!) however I will be at the SCG on the 21st cheering on our boys. Gee, it's going to be weird seeing BBBBH slotting goals at the SCG not wearing the R&W (perhaps he'll have an off night). Anyway, I'll have ear glued to the trannie for what is likely to be a fascinating contest. Go the ranga. There, I've shown my colours.

what about both Julia & Tony being at tha SCG on election night - I mean she goes for the Bulldogs and Tony should go for the Swans they are playing each other - its a media dream!!! - imagine the excitement and hoo har,you could have have Antony Green sitting on the boundary at a card table with his laptop, giving commentary of the results during the match. Kerry O'Brien can interview the Auskick kids & their Dads on the pitch at half time asking them for their opinion - then by 3/4 time one of them should know whether they have won or not - so the Victory/Loser speeches can be done then! And to celebrate/commiserate (what ever way you go) a special "Kick to kick" at full time with special guest kicker Laurie Oaks!

LOL Love it. Let's get onto the networks. Could even do a celeb match beforehand, I'd pay to see Gillard do a "Mumford tackle" on Abbott!

You could have the NSW V VIC Federal policiticians - See Belinda Neal go out fighting - or Joe Hockey giving someone a massive bump - another pollie grabbing John Faulkners glasses and stomping on them in protest that he's had the same bloody frames since 1992 and at the end everyone gang tackling Wilson Tuckey with a slab as the prize to the first person who can knock him out! the possibilities are endless!

Actually Antony Green is a big Swans fan whom I have, from time to time, seen (and met) in the Bradman Stand. I know FOR SURE, he will not be coming to the game on 21st August.

hey all he needs is a card table - a laptop - ok a whiteboard behind him and a tv camera - and it will all be good to go back to the national tally room - its doable!!!

Antony Green is a big Swans supporter and I have seen him at the SCG a number of times, decked out in red and white. I'm sure he was quite dissappointed when Gillard called the election for 21 August.

He missed a Swans game for the Fremantle by-election in 2009. Can't see him missing the big one.

I'm missing the Swans versus the Eagles match at the Olympic Stadium for this. For those who don't follow AFL, the Swans and Eagles have played a spectacular string of close matches over the last five seasons. This is also the first time Barry Hall has played against the Eagles since he floored Brent Staker with a haymaker punch in the corresponding game last year.
