Round 18: Geelong pre-game discussion (With Teams)

Who on earth would you drop? Who deserves to be dropped after that performance more than any other player? If you're going to drop anybody, you might as well drop the whole side. Aside from maybe 5 or 6 players, everybody else was equally horrible. It wasn't a few individual performances that cost us, so making a few individual changes will achieve nothing.

Dropping players isn't the only way to let them know that the performance was not satisfactory. It's not embracing it. It's putting the challenge to them: you've been given a chance to bounce back, so you had bloody well better take it.

The only change I would have been in favour of would have been Richards out for LRT if fit. LRT wasn't fit, so Richards stays in.

Richards should of been dropped in a heartbeat. How many chances does that bloke get. Sam Reid has been named in the best for the ressies regularly over the past two months and it's quite unreal that a rebuilding side continues to play an average player who is playing @@@@house while a promising young kid is left in the reserves after two months of fantastic footy. That's bull@@@@.

Rhyce Shaw has played about 3 good games this season and was shocking last week. He would be another one to drop. We have one too many rebounding defenders in the side atm. One has to go.

ROK was absolutely terrible on the weekend and has been under performing for most of the season so I would of given him a run in the twos aswell

You can't pick the same side after being beaten by 14 goals. I think we would be the only side to not make changes after a drubbing like that in the last 20 years.

I actually like this move by Roos. Its like he's saying to the playing group...."you guys are the ones who put in that shocking performance last week, I'll leave it to the SAME bunch of guys to get us out of it".

I'm 100% with you here I reckon making wholesale changes is the easy option.

You honestly think Reid would have done a better job than Richards against that Melbourne barrage?

Shaw has played many more than 3 good games this season. He also did not stand out as our worst against Melbourne. He is still putting in best 22 performancs, dropping him would make little sense.

ROK is in the same boat as Shaw. Disappointing, but still generally putting in solid performances.

You can certainly pick the same side after getting done by 14 goals. The reason we got done wasn't because of our bottom 2 or 3 players on the day. Dropping them would achieve nothing. It was the mindset of the entire team, not the performances of a few players, that was the cause of the thrashing. Dropping players for no other reason than a poor team performance is idiocy.

I'd like to see Shaw back on the HBF instead of Mattner. Same role as last year where he was successful and comfortable. He seems lost anywhere else.

Poor team performances are a result of poor individual performances.

Poor individual performances is the reason players get dropped.

I like the strategy, if they put in the same piss-poor performance then we will definitely be seeing some changes for Hawthorn (who we have a much better chance against at the SCG)

Coincidence or intelligent coaching? Watching Essendon last night reminded me of Melbourne thrashing us last week. St Kilda under Lyons, ex Swan coaching team, plays similarly to Sydney. Melbourne did their homework on us. Essendon coaches probably watched our game against Melbourne in their preparation against St Kilda. Roos said he would forget last week's loss but I doubt that coaches of our remaining opponents won't review that game over and over. A red flashing beacon THIS IS HOW TO BEAT THE SWANS. (includes, but is not limited to, kick it, kick it fast, kick it to a contest, play on at every opportunity, get to the ball first, get it out fast, handball then kick to target, kick to a contest, kick it to a contest, kick it forward, not back...)

Same team, same coaches, same head in the sand attitude. Even if all the boys play their guts out, our unaltered game plan will see us go down against Geelong in a screaming heap. And I hope I am dead wrong.

That sounds like the game plan the Swans used to flatten the Blues. The Bombers didn't even have to work as hard at spreading last night as the Dees did last week. And the Bombers played heaps of tempo footy - when the Saints flooded forward the Bombers kicked backwards and sideways until they had to come out and then the Bombers went forward. Simple really - try hard, win games.

When the Swans play aggressive footy they play on and move the ball with confidence. When they go into their shell they try to do their "tempo" thing but it's far less effective these days as there's no element of surprise. Saying the Swans still have the same gameplan as 2005 is too simplistic. Like every other team, deny them the ball and they look incompetent and lose.

And isn't it pure bliss to see the Saints look woeful while Bruce leads the commentary wankers are declaring "if the Saints just kick another goal the task they face isn't impossible", then the Bombers score again? I didn't hear much about how the Swans could come back last week when the game was just as much out of our grasp.

I hope McVeigh sat up last night and studied how his big brother did it. I bet that game encouraged the Cats not to be complacent. I hope it also gave the Swans some hope that tonight could surprise some people.

Good points, Go Swannies. Except that we try not to kick to a contest because we are pretty woeful overall at contested marks and Melbourne exploited this. And, did you notice, when Essendon were kicking it around the back line how fast they did it? Seemed like twice as fast as we do.

I was at the saints cats game a few weeks back. The cats did not handle the wet at all and didnt score in the last half. I think the bloods can win this, but we'll all need to do a rain dance to make sure its slippery.
