Strategy for the last 5 games.

After the trouncing on the weekend it would be good to look ahead rather than behind. We have 5 games left to prove ourselves and only 5 games to test the reserves players about whom decisions need to be made at the end of the year.

If you look at the Swans list there are a number of players who would have the running capacity to keep pace with a team like Melbourne on the MCG. And there are 3 aspects of running ability, the ability to accelerate, to maintain a high speed sprint and the ability to sustain running ability all day (the tank).

Those who don't have a brilliant sprint can make up for that with an excellent tank. Those that can do both are blessed with a major advantage. Acceleration is often the key attribute on a smaller ground, the sustained sprint and big tank are major advantages on a big ground.

Our list has a number of players with all round running ability. Apart from the obvious ones (Jetta and Rohan) the others less tried seem to be Heath, TDL (very quick), LJ , MOD, Sumner,McKaigue.

Players with exceptional tank are Hanners (his main asset apart from great skill and a football brain),
Barlow, Reid, Gordon, McVeigh as well.

Vesz and Meredith have acceleration and Vesz also has a good sustained sprint.

I think we have all seen enough of Jetta to know what his strengths and weaknesses are, and perhaps it is time to put him on ice until he bulks up a bit and overcomes the yips.

We somehow need to try out Heath and TDL and give Barlow and MOD one or two more last chances.

Obviously Rohan has to come in and we may with luck get back Bradshaw, C.Bolts and Seaby, Smith, Bird and LRT.

So after all that, what does this mean for Stategy?

My point is that perhaps winning this week against Geelong (fat chance anyway) is not something we should worry too much about. Rather we should be trying to uncover players who provide us with what we need to beat the other teams. And we should also be giving the guys who might be up for trade that last chance so that we really know where we stand at trade time. With all of the players returning soon it will be almost impossible in a couple of weeks time.

Vesz, Meredith, Reid,Heath, Barlow and TDL should all be in the running.

Otherwise we have let the chance go by.
We have them where we want them, everything is going according to plan!

Fundamentally agree with your post, but obviously there is more to footy (much more) than running ability.

Also, it's looking pretty certain that the number of interchanges will be capped next year, which will change things up, although how and how much is anyone's guess. Presumably, the Diesel Williams types will be the beneficiaries.
He had observed that people who did lie were, on the whole, more resourceful and ambitious and successful than people who did not lie.

I'd certainly like to see O'Dwyer get another chance before season's end. He looked to me last year to be a very good prospect as a small defender or tagger and our backline isn't getting any younger. I'd hate to see a player like that dropped off the list without getting the chance to prove himself. The same goes for Currie who seems to have slipped to fourth ranking on the ruck list without ever playing a senior game. Dennis-Lane and Sumner are first year players and presumably don't need to be rushed. It's the ones who've been around for two or three years who must be in some peril.

All those blokes are listed as 2-3 weeks It's hard for a ruckman to come back and have a major impact after a long injury layoff and play for maybe 2 weeks the same with Bolton he wouldn't be very mobile and is it worth the risk better off to have uninterupted pre season and come back fresh for next season.Bradshaws lay off hasn't been so long hopefully he'll be back sooner rather than later

From what I could tell last Sunday, we were getting smashed in the mid field clearances, so didn't have the ball. You can be a 100 to 200 metre Olympic champion (Bolt?) but you will never outrun a ball after it's been kicked down field.

Very sadly, a combination of injuries and home run horror games will see us miss the 8 again. The positives is the younger players will get more experience. I would like to see LJ to debut and play at least 2 games and see TDL and other juniors get a few games as well.

Only thing to look forward to is the Club Champion Dinner now.

So 1-2 weeks means 3-4 weeks and 2-3 weeks means indefinate?

We will make the 8 by beating Brisbane and winning one of the games against Hawthorn, Bulldogs, Fremantle or Geelong.

With two of those games at the SCG we are very likely to win one of those no matter who play.

Yes, I agree that Jetta should be rested. He has good skills except unlucky with his goal kicking. I can see us probably winning only 2 games and that may be not enough to keep us in the top 8.

All I can say is I hope you're right. If we could win two, it would be Freo and Lions. Freo also hit with injuries. However, if we do make 8 and go out in week 1, what difference does it make?

We always seem to play Ok against the hawks we would need LRT back though.

Personally I think the Dockers in front of a big crowd at Subi will run us into the ground, saying that though they do have a few injuries....you never know
