Swans go under as AFL continues funding GWS

2015 will be the last season for the fiercely independent and supporter loving Syney Swans. Andrew Dimetriou yesterday denied that his ongoing dislike of the Sydney Swans was the motivation for the AFL continuing to prop up GWS. "It's all about TV rights" he said. "We save millions by having no supporters attend the GWS games which gives the umpires freedom from crowd scrutiny to order the games as they see fit, including live replay to accentuate dramatic portions of play or change the outcome. GWS games are played on Friday afternoons and edited for showing at 7:30pm that night. It means that we can raise revenue from the betting on the GWS until the final siren and insert different passages of play, depending on the betting at any point in the game. As a new side GWS needs all the help it can get. Sydney Swans have had their chance, they shouldn't have won the 2005 Grand Final with that ugly style of play. I and the umpires vowed that it would never happen again for the good of AFL. But, just in case it does, we have recruited heavily from the ranks of Rugby League."

I won't be attending any GWS games unless the Swans are playing, no matter how many GWS games are scheduled to be played in Canberra.
