Is it just me or does anyone else think this coaching transition to Longmire is a *bit* too cosy?

To be honest, I would rather the Club go through a proper selection process - maybe Horse is too close to Roosy to take the club forward?

It just seems very strange to me - wouldn't happen too often at other clubs - yeah I know Collingwood but Buckley is a star former player.

Bit too smooth (the transition) for my liking.

I have nothing against succession planning, but Longmire has to change how we play, and get the team to take on the opposition instead of the defensive mindset that is a large reason why we turn it over so much. Worries me that Roos will have some sort of support role. Longmire must coach in his own right. I would hope he doesn't have the spectre of Roos looking over his shoulder.

Our skills are so poor, decision making is lamentable and our intensity at the footy has dropped off so dramatically, that I suggest some of the support coaches be shown the door after the last game for 2010. Especially that person responsible for the midfield. I think we need a bit of oomph and inspiration. That spark that provides an X factor. Aker anyone?

I just had a horrible thought. What if Roos has taken a backseat by coaching off the bench, and the real coach is upstairs?

Is this a Swans fans site or a Swans creche for whinging fair weather juvenile supporters who have little or no idea of the realities of the AFL competition and the demands which surround it. The current coaching staff and the culture it has developed won a premiership and took us to successive finals. We are still in the eight, although decimated be injuries. We are blooding young players after the most successful trade and drafting period we have had in my memory (60 years). Why wouldn't we have a coaching succession plan rather than a knee jerk throw-out-the-baby-with-the-bathwater reaction. Remember Roos came through from Eade's panel. Richmond has had a million coaches and are basically in the same position as normal, so let's not try that one! Geelong are talking about Sanderson when Thompson retires. You only bring in a new broom when the place needs sweeping out and I think the Sydney Swans are still the envy of most clubs in terms of their culture, administration and ability to remain competitive for so long.

Go back further. Barassi annointed Eade to succeed him at the end of 1995.

Well Roosy has been paid as no. 1 so I reckon he is still running the show.

Roos was a coach under Eade...took over and transformed the plan. What makes us think that Longmire would blindly follow Roos 's ideas? He gets paid now to implement the head coach's plan. From the end of the season, he gets paid to implement his own plan, and NOT BEFORE!

Succession planning and open recruitment both have advantages and drawbacks but I think it is worth waiting a couple of years to see if the chosen management strategy pays dividends. The swans have invested a lot into a succession planning coaching model and to change strategies so late in the day is very risky. The major benefit I see is that Longmire will be in a better position to get the players to adapt to a new style of play than a coach coming from another club.

I agree. I can't put my finger on it but there is something about Longmire that is superior to Roos. I was looking at him on the field with the kids (school holidays coaching climic) and he will stamp his own on the team when he is in charge. Will all the assistant coaches stay or will that change as well?
