    Rookie Elevation Question

With the retirement of Hank, are we able to elevate another rookie?
We have them where we want them, everything is going according to plan!

Hank was never on the senior list in the first place,. He was a nomintated rookie that could play in 2010, which needed to be done so before the season started.

If we want to, we can nominate another rookie out of Gilchrist, Gordon, McKaigue, McNeil or Orreal as an injury replacement for Seaby. But Orreal is injured, neither Gilchrist, Gordon or McKaigue would be considered for senior selection at this stage so it's worthless money wise.

That just leaves McNeil who according to reserves watchers has performed well this year but is very undersized.

Thanks. Can't help but feel that McNeil could be given a go despite his size (his is bigger than Jetta and at least as big as McGlynn btw).

He would be the only option, but we have Johnstone, Sumner and Veszpremi all ahead of him looking for senior selection in the last 4 games, so not realy worth taking the financial hit however small it might be for the rest of the year.

Dill is great, but not seniors great - yet. He is a kid. A little kid. Give him a bit of time, say about 18 months, and he will make a very good footballer, but at present enjoy the ride and watch his development, along with Gordon. Those two are a good combination and have been cooking nicely in the swans ressie pot. But the reality is one is a promoted scholarship and one is a rookie......neither of them is ready.

Slightly off topic (but we've covered the OP, so let's just move along, shall we?) Orreal and Gilchrist - will they be on our list next year? Orreal seems to be consistently injured and that's more than I've heard about Gilchrist. Both contracts expire this year (according to RWO Wiki), neither has played a game. Is it likely they'll be delisted, or are they worth keeping on (I've never seen either play)?

Gilly played in last weekend's game, and I can say that he has improved in the last 18 months. He used to be up forward, and imo this wasn't his best position. This game he was down back, and had the kicking in duties, which he did with a degree of intelligence. That alone doesn't smack of a kid who is going to be moved on. He is finding his feet, and growing somewhat taller and has a more solid body. He grows a mean beard, but he is still very young. Has a way to go, but I would be surprised if they move him on.

As for Oreal, I just don't know. He had a back injury which has had him out the whole year, but that is not an increasing time off, he was diagonised with a full year off right from the start. They haven't dissed him. My opinion is that as he was taller than Spida (6"9") it makes him a commodity that is hard to get. I think he will be persisted with, unless he decides its not for him. Or they may be holding on to him to trade to Gold Coast, that's his area anyway. Not starting a rumour here, but looking at the possibilities. 6'10" ruckmen are rare and he used to work below his knees as well.

I've never seen Gilly play anywhere but down back. Always played at HBF or deeper in defence.

Swansrob, fwiw, I'd also be surprised if he wasn't kept around for another year. He is a prodigious long kick. He reminds me of Mattner with a bit less attacking flair but a bit better defensive ethic. I'm not adopting him as my lovechild or anything, but he's a project worth keepimg IMO.

I haven't seen much of Gilly, but he's very skinny, and has a small frame which doesn't look like it will fill out much more. Lovely kick though, from what I've seen, so if we can find a way to make him an AFL player it would be great.

I've never seen McNeil play but love everything I hear about him - wouldn't it be nice for him to spend some quality time in the seniors with Kirky before he leaves? Probably not, but the romantic in me sees it as a nice handing over of the baton.

Thanks for the replies. So it sounds like everyone is in agreeance that Gilly stays.
Only Primmy brought up Orreal, though. With the news now that Pyke has signed on for another two years and Currie waiting in the wings, surely we simply don't have room for a fifth ruckman, despite his freakish height?

last year he was playing down the wing and trying to kick goals, was beaten by defense too often. Did slot one or two on the angle though. Definitely not in defense in 2009. Not seen much of him this year, but must admit he did seem self assured with his KI duties.

It's not unheard of for defenders to sneak up to a wing and have a shot at goal and when your boot is as good as Gilly's, it is almost compulsory. We are obviously going to have to just disagree, as we are as definate as each other as to whether he played in defence or not.

Swanrob, as for Orreal, it's hard to make a definative call without knowing the full extent of the injury. He improved in leaps and bounds last year, but is still well behind what would be required. Certainly the emergence of Myke as a bona fide ruck option will not help his cause. I'd be surprised if he remains on the list tbh
