I have never ever heard more unjustified calls of "ball" than from Blues supporters at Ethiad a month ago. In fact I think Sydney crowds generally show more knowledge of the rules than Melbourne ones do - watch the Pies' cheersquad go off when a fully justified penalty is paid against the Pies. Around me at the SCG I often hear a muttering of "Nah, that was a fair call".

This is something I notice from most Melbourne crowds, You only have to touch the ball, and they call BALLLL.

I hate that too - the holding the ball rule is a basic tenet of AFL which a lot a fans from the 'traditional' footy states and teams just don't seem to get.

Most of those comments were by Matthew Lloyd, what would you expect?

The worst thing about Jettas goal is that Kelli Underwood was calling it.

However, it made the highs and lows on ABC radio on Sunday and has been the most shown highlight of the round on TV that I have seen in Melbourne.

Couldnt agree any more with the Kellie Underwood thing.

Believe me , Im not a hater of hers nor am I a fan.
It just didnt sound right and i didnt enjoy her calling a game of ours at all.
Liz, is right Clinton Grybus was the best, he made it sound right and did it naturally

While on that subject, I'd prefer the rule to be wound back quite a bit. Now you have a nanosecond to dispose of or it's holding. Personally I love seeing a player shrug tackles to get to space (even Judd or Ablett - but they don't get pinged anyway) so I think it should go back to deliberately holding the ball to slow play, not merely to stay in attack. Fond memories of Turncoat Baz simply running over players - and like the signs of the same from Jesse and Mummy, the human bulldozer.

As far as I know the rule is still "retarded in possession with (prior) opportunity to dispose". Running over a player ala Baz isn't being retarded by their tackle.

I hate to admit this but hearing Kelli Underwood's commentary, I felt a touch of closeted sexism. Put simply, I really regret that such a moment as Lewis Jetta's goal was commentated by a woman. I feel really bad about this, but hopefully my sexist feelings about female running commentators will change. That said, I have no problems with senior journalists and occasional broadcasters, such Caroline Wilson or Rebecca Wilson (with the NRL); or a boundary commentor like Kristie Malthouse.

I was appalled at the call of the Dees game particularly the opening when Green's shot at goal bounced off the post. Friday night Collingwood game and they would be all over it.

Commetti, Bruce and co just spent the game barracking for Melbourne.

Victorian's hate us and I can see why. We can be pretty hard to swallow when we play lock down footy but we have equal rights at impartial calling. The AFL is more worried about the Sydney market and I would suggest they should be having a quiet word about the calling of interstate teams...

Except Commetti's not from Melbourne.

Re: Mixing up of players, it is irritating but I do it myself with Mattner/Grundy, Bevan/Hanners all the time and I can forgive the commentators that.

Lloyd's just terrible. His comments are littered with verbal mistakes. His comment about the Sydney crowd has been mentioned but did anyone else notice when he was talking about the lack of form of a Swan (i think Jesse White) Lloydy said perhaps Roos should send him back to the Sydney competition... C'mon. C'mon. SOME RESEARCH PLEASE. Don't appear completely ignorent of my team, that's all I'm asking for, you can still be biased... Even Underwood who seems pretty astute said Jetta turned 19 this year.

Sandy Roberts was always great at commentating the Swans - Leaping Leo Barry etc.. Dermy was good when it was on CH9. He He seemed to be having fun no matter what and well as providing some interesting insight. McAvaney has always been a twit. Steven Quartermaine does a good job.. The right blend of professionalism and enthusiasm whilst being neutral..

I had a friend with me one day who thought I was psychic for doing that. A lot of the time I find the umpire's stance gives it away, combined with years of watching the game.

If the umpires weren't based at Rushcutters Bay I'd be really tempted to have a whack at it again in the lower leagues.

There was a period in the late 90s where Bruce was commentating with Roosy, and it really felt like a bias commentary our way! Loved it.

FWIW, Bruce is a South Australian who lives full time in Adelaide and Commetti a Western Australian who lives full time in Perth, so there is no Victorian bias from either of them. I find Sandy very fair also and have found a few streams to listen to him on the new AFL Live commentary they do for Regional Australia.

I know Bruce is a bit of a "Love him or hate him" guy, but the tightest and most accurate commentary from the whole weekend is always from the 7 team IMO, as for the Melbourne game, what were they supposed to do? Sydney were awful and Melbourne were showing glimpses of what might be their future, of course it would feel like a Melbourne love in to a Sydney fan.

Foxtel is great for a Sydneysider who LOVES AFL, but its AFL coverage is the most Melbourne centric out of all the footy broadcasters and I personally think their commentary teams are full of weak callers supported by many ex players turned player agents who just don't do the research required to be effective.

AFL 360 on Fox Sports 1 on Wednesday Nights, normally choose two moments within games and replay them 4 times with 4 different commentaries, one from TV and the other three from Radio. I'd expect Jetta's goal to get this treatment! Can't wait to hear it from a radio point of view.
