    Forward pressure

Hate to be the damp squib in between home finals and star re-signings but I reckon we (and by that I mean RWO) need to solve this dilemma before we can call the 2010 flag our own.

We've seen stats that suggest we're #16 in the comp for goals from frwd 50 turnovers and while I recognise that there is more than one way to win a flag, the current AFL standard bearers, the Pies, just happen to be absolutely freakn brilliant when he comes to forcing the ball to stay in its F50.

Watching the weekend's game, if the Dockers hadn't been able to springboard attacks from their HB line, I'm not too sure how they would have scored a goal.

Here's how I would rate our current forward players on the "lock-the-bloody-ball-in" scale (out of 5):
Jess - 2 For a mobile big bloke should be better than this - I remember his superb second effort tackle on Hurley vs BOmbers - why don't we see this more often?
TDL - 1 Was particularly poor at this on the weekend - should be better and will have to be if he expects to get a game more regularly
Moore - 2 Once again, should be better - he's not fast but he reads the play well, but allowed Broughton to run off him too much last week
Goodes - 2 To be fair, if you're going to use one of your prime midfielders to "rest" at CHF, you can't expect him to be chasing as well - but does use his footy smarts to get to the right positions
Pyke/Mummy 1 - not really their job but did love Mummy's efforts in Q4 this week
Shaw/Bevan 3 - might save the 2010 season for these guys if they show they can kick a goal as well
Kirk/Bolton/McGlynn 4 - our best, there is a real sense of urgency and desperation in how they go about defending their space in the forward 50

Just seems to me an easy way for us to score some goals rather than the generally hard slog we require. What options do others think we have to improve this? Do others think it's actually a major issue? I think a Rohan or possibly even Vespa (who did this well in his short stint in the seniors) would be good ins for this purpose.

Interesting, just posted in another thread, I think you need to take a step back in the process to find the answer.

We simply don't turn enough possession into marks I50. We're fairly we'll down on the list for I50, I don't know exactly but my guess is we'd be rock bottom for marks I50 for entries I50. The classic uncosted kick form 70m out inside 50 very rarely hits a clear up target allowing the opposition to "mop up" easily and rebound.

That's been true enough. But in the past few weeks we've been doing much better at bringing the ball to ground and then crumbing it. It would be a lot easier way to win if we could simply get the ball into the sticky hands of a marking forward who is an accurate goal kick.

        Interesting.............

        just had a look here

PRO-STATS Australian Rules Football - The Stats The Coaches Use

Assuming these are correct, we are actually 3rd for hit up targets inside 50 and first as a percentage of all I50 entries. Perception is a funny thing!!!

Collingwood are 2nd for hit up targets, but 2nd last as a percentage of total I50, probably a much higher percentage of running inside 50 entries and running shots on goal.

Sorry to be a damp squid but we are no chance for winning the flag this year. Just an honorable finals series will do.

No no no, there's no room for soggy octopii here - need to work harder as my school report said for years.

I noticed Ross Lyon on OWAAT last night conceding that a forward that is laying 5-6 tackles a game can afford to be carried even if they're not scoring goals. Moore (2 tackles per game) and White (1 tackle pg!!) need to improve and generally we need some more structure about how we keep the ball inside our forward 50.

Hehehehe,Reality versus fantasy! We do have the makings of a good future team and that is exciting. Personally I would have liked a more long term view as Swans policy this year but what the heck! It's Roosey's last year, its Kirky's last year,Let them leave in a blaze of glory playing Finals is good morale building stuff.
