Was always a very long shot to get Daniher so no surprise really.

The thing to remember about Father-Son draftees is that the other clubs make sure they now cost you somewhere close to real value. If he is as good as they say he is, maybe even a No.1 draft pick, then Essendon will have to part with their first ND pick in 2012. If they finish say bottom four/five then it will only be a minor advantage.

The two drafts to have highly rated Father-Son picks is 2010 (lucky Bulldogs, twice) and 2011 (lucky us) where due to the bulk of early draft picks being given to GC and GWS, a club won't have to burn a high draft pick to secure a top 10 player.

Thanks to GWS, he wont come cheap.

Differing versions exist of how much was offered and for how long but it is accepted that Mitchell had at least $1 million put in front of him by GWS and as much as $1.5m after Sydney realised the need to open its own wallet.

Pretty gossipy, and a tad sensationalist. It throws in the air the idea that GWS may have offered him circa $750k for his third year, and highlights that's more than Luke Hodge gets- they then fail to break down the alledged increased offer of $1.5 for 5 years, without breaking that down; after the numbers they suggested were locked in for the first 2 years ($260k in total) that would then be about $440k per year for 3 years- a lot for a youngster? Yes! Massively over paying? I think in all honesty in modern football, just. Keep in mind salaries will have moved a few times before that 3rd year would have kicked in, too.

I'd be intrigued to see what Dan Hannebery's 3 year contract pays him, I think people might be suprised how much it takes to keep elite youth.

Even given the inflated amounts in the GWS salary cap, if they were prepared to burn that amount of money on Mitchell in the third year of his contract then he must be an absolute gun in the making in their opinion because -

GWS have to financially satisfy a heap of other young guns that they already have picked as 17yo in the past few months and the ones they will pick up in the ND this year with picks 1,2,3,5,7,9,11,13,15 etc plus pay over the odds for established players they wil need to sign later this year.

So is the story accurate given all those financial considerations of GWS? Hmmm, probably a touch over done just to make the story look newsworthy.

In that case I'm just happy he is Swans bound for what will probably be a National Draft pick around the 20 mark - bargain!

Not too worried about how much a gun player may or may not cost us in the 2014 season and beyond as there will have been plenty of changes in the player list and salary cap by then.

As a matter of interest, if we lose a player to GWS and receive a first round pick in recompense would we have to give that up for Mitchell? Interesting point perhaps but let's hope it's hypothetical.

No, father son selections are done before any draft or trade periods, so only regulation draft picks are used. So that pick is locked in and can't be traded to another team or used to draft another player. Compo picks aren't used as you can bank them for up to 5 years, as well as trade them.

For example since bulldogs finished 4th, they got picks 22 and 39 from memory.

And those two were used to lock in both Wallis and Liberatore through father/son. If they decided to keep their compo pick from harbrow instead of trading it and used it last year, their picks at the national draft would look like 22 (Wallis), Compo Pick (26-27ish) then 39 (Libba)

I like it Liz - or better still, pick 26 the premiers pick :-)

I'm just being cautious, I'd love it to be pick 25 or 26, just so long as we aren't using pick 18 or higher as that will mean we have missed the finals :-(
