    2009 Draft a Massive Success

In the past we haven't been the best in maximising our draft choices, but this was definitely not the case this year.
I think we did very well with Gary Rohan, Lewis Jetta and TDL. I can't think of the last time we had three draftees who played senior footy the very next year and just didn't play but made a difference. And you can see the impact and benefits it has on the side.
When you add the Dan Hannebery, Sam Reid and Kieren Jack into the mix, the future looks great.

Sorry head is a bit woozy from the Rising Star function.

Have you forgotten Vezpremi, MOD,Campbell Heath, Lewis Johnson, Gilchrist and The scholarship boys? With the others you mentioned, there's about 12 youngsters that could make it given the right kind of mentoring is used with them as some obviously have some issues. Throw in the great recruiting of Seaby, Kennedy, Mc Glynne,Pyke and The Mummy, and don't forget Bird there's 18! A side! The Future looks great indeed!

When Roosy recently said that a number of the guys in the 2s hadn't done enough to warrant selection even though he wanted to drop players, he was referring to some of these guys. I think a few of the guys you mentioned will be delisted.

There have been comments from many about the recruiting in general, but the draft in particular deserves a special word of praise. Just outstanding by the spotters and recruiters, and the results speak for themselves. Of course, we'll add our say!

He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

The impressive thing for me about last year's draft wasn't so much the actual players chosen and the short term impact they've had, but that the recruiting team seemed to identify a specific trait (the need for speed) and then went all out in their pursuit of it. They might have been forgiven, after picking Rohan at 6, to go for a more solid, "typical Swans type" at 15. But they didn't, and kept going with the pace factor right the way through the draft.

It was second only to the single-minded, bold approach they took a few weeks earlier, in trade week - not to phaff around too long on the Hall and Jolly deals, to secure Seaby early, not to haggle unnecessarily with the Cats over Mummy, not to get distracted by the Fevola sideshow.

Whatever happens this weekend and hopefully over the next 3 weekends, our recruiting staff have done a fantastic job this season. We have 4 young guys that will all be regulars in our team next year, and all have clear marks of class about them. You'd hope that all 4 of them might go on to be long term players for the club, and the recruiters deserve all the praise they get- and thats without considering our trading efforts too. Getting Mumford in to replace Jolly was a sensational move for the club, and it already has and will continue to pay big dividends for the club for a long time.

its interesting because both geelong and hawthorn have very successful drafts where they got 4+ premiership players for geelong in 2001 they got bartel, kelly, johnson, ablett similarly hawthorn got hodge, ladson, brown and mitchell.

The way its looking 2009 could be such a draft for us Rohan, Jetta, TDL, Reid who look like being real quality and the possibility of Sumner and McNeil becoming good players as well.

much credit mus be given to stuey and the team for their inspired drafting of pace, skill and footy smarts.
                      I applaud you!

Glad someone mentioned Sumner, think he may be one that hasn't had his chance but can develop into a really good player.

Love the point that a few of the recent premiership teams have had a really strong draft and the 2009 crew may be the ones who propel us to our next flag, hopefully in 2010.

Twas a very good draft. The players on my wish list pre-draft (from memory) were Rohan at 6 (ideally Martin, but it was never going to happen), Talia at 14, Reid at 39, McNeil and whoever at 54 and 55, so to only miss out on Talia, but get Jetta, Sumner and TDL, was fantastic, especially with the way they've come along. TDL has been pure quality, and Jetta has been Jetta, while from what I've seen, Sumner has a LOT to be excited about.
Officially on the Reid and Sumner bandwagon!

In his Fox Sports interview Roos nominated Veszpremi and Johnston as two young players that the club rates very highly who didn't get a chance this year.

So who was he referring to when he said this:
"Unfortunately our seconds aren't putting enough pressure on," Roos said.

"A lot of players we would like to have stepped up haven't been doing that, so that's a bit disappointing.
