Everitt interviewed about his new life at the Swans. Nothing unusual, except for this:

"They know what players they need and obviously they needed a defender, so they came after me and I was lucky enough for it to work out."

I thought we were well-served up back with 3 talls plus a handy spare, and Smith, Kennelly, Melco, Shaw, Mattner as tightass defenders or runner/receivers. I guess an extra runner would be handy with Kennelly hitting the ten-year mark, but I don't see any obvious shortage in our back half.

Lends more weight to Reid being developed as a forward which I am not displeased with.

Bolton's highly competent on the medium forwards too - if he's fit it gives the coaches the option of moving Smithy into the midfield. Everitt is probably competing more with the flankers, by sounds of things. He and Mattner might be after just the one spot. Spangher surely has to be seen as an insurance policy at this stage. And while Ted is a bit of a favourite, he got squeezed out at the start of 2010 despite being in OK form, and won't be a surprise if a similar thing happens this year. He's not a bad "first reserve" to have though.

I agree with this summation Liz. I have been wondering though, if the same "ethos" (for want of a better word) is at the club with a new coach, where the players recruited from other clubs were promised they would be in the 22 come round one and the onus was then on them to keep their place.

I also agree Liz, and its probably why Ted got his gong as best ClubMan. He doesn't fuss. But he is always ready.

Not sure if Spangs is a walk up start. He wasn't at WestCoast.

Sammy is still a developing kid. A big developing kid to be sure, but its all coathanger shoulders and talent that they will nurture. We can't judge them all against Hanners. He is just different to the rest.

Anyway, to go back to my point, I think we agree there's no obvious dearth of defenders. Agree that Everitt is bound to be a flanker.

The competition for places will be incredibly hot. Cricket Australia, take note.

Our backline is definitely aging if you look at Bolton 31 in May, Kennelly 30 in July, LRT 28 in Sept, Marty 29 in Aug, Bevo 27 in Sept, Mal 27 in Aug. It doesn't hurt to have the likes of Everitt (some experience), Spanger (some experience), both Jonno's & what ever other young players they decide to use in the back half to fill the gaps. Grundy is still young, 25 in June, & has developed into a fine CHB/FB & the centre of our defence. With a few players with injuries, B2 & LRT, I think we are blessed to have so many in reserve & still have the experience of Teddy, 28 in Jan, to call upon.
