Really pleased and a little surprised about the fact that at the Brownlow Dinner, the AFL chose the Swans' 2005 Premiership/Leo Barry marked as the top moment of the decade; with Nick Davis' final quarter effort against the Cats in the SCG semi-final of the same season coming in third.

(Second was Jason Macartney's 2002 comeback game; fourth: can't remember;fifth: Port Adelaide's 2004 Premiership, win with particular emphasis on Mark Williams' victory speech).

Yes amazing that two of the top five moments of the decade were by the swans in 2005 considering the basting we copped on our game style and also considering that in that decade there were dominant brisbane and geelong teams and a west coast team that was set to rule the world at one stage.

4th was the forgettable "toe poke" of Scarlett to Ablett on the 09 GF. Clever but not that sensational. Certainly no more memorable than Luke Ablett's desperate 30m+ knock along the boundary that was a key part of Davis' final goal.

I was truly thrilled for Nic Davis being recognised at third, because it was one hell of an event! Perfect for Jason McCartney, that was also one hell of an effort, and the best of the best "The Mark" of the Decade!

With Jason McCartney it is a different kind of courage and effort,persistence over time. Praiseworthy for sure but different to the heat of battle. To kick 4 goals a match is praiseworthy, to kick four goals in a quarter is amazing,to kick four coming from behind is sensational while to do this in a do or die Final to get us in the GF is unforgetable! Number 1 or 2 IMO.

Leo's mark is unforgettable too,a number 1or 2. Fullback's are supposed to spoil! A spilt ball at that stage of the GF could have easy led to a WCE goal.To go for the mark was an amazing decsion with high risk, to front leap the pack was backing yourself 100%,he had to get very high, (don't take it and your gone),to sour with the eagles when your body has endured 100 minutes of battering was sensational and to hold a mark in that situation ..unforgetable!! My two greatest football moments without a shadow of doubt.

I hope the mods and customers don't mind that I've copied this from the Brownlow thread. It seemed like the right place.

Couldn't find a link with a quick look, but here are the moments:
1. Leo's mark
2. Jason McCartney returns to football after Bali
3. The Miraculous Quarter of St Nick Davis
4. A toepoke by Matthew Scarlett to tilt the GF in Geelong's favour (what on earth ...?)
5. Mark Williams chokes one last time and gives Alan Scott a return of serve.

As is evident from my comment, i think the Scarlett effort was no more than filler, and the people who said (in the other thread) that it was to give Geelong a guernsey are probably right. Plenty more memorable moments: pick from several goals oty, marks oty (none like Leo's!), etc. In fact, that could make a decent competition: choose another moment from the noughties to replace the toe-poke.
Apart from those already singled out, I really enjoyed Mark Williams's response to winning the GF. A favourite moment!

My most memorable "non swans" noughties moment was at Sheed's last game at Subi.

(From memory), the crim budgies won the game and as a send off to Sheeds, the crowd waved their scarves in the air (like he'd done to them a few years (?) before). (Memory ain't so good ... all the non-swans games seem to roll into one.)

I don't know whether that was "respect" or they were giving it to him, but I sure loved it.

About the only time in Leo's career he did run straight- but boy did he time when to run straight and jump perfectly to grab that mark. I'd hate to think that without it we might still be waiting to break the drought!
