    New name for Subiaco Oval

Full story at Austadiums.com :: New name for Subiaco Oval

    I hate this trend......

    Opening two paras......

"Perth's largest stadium, Subiaco Oval, has been renamed Patersons Stadium, with Perth-based stockbroker Patersons Securities securing a four-year, multi-million dollar deal to rebrand the historic ground.

It is the first time in its 102-year existence that Subiaco Oval has been rebranded, after the Subiaco council blocked a $5 million bid from mobile phone retailer Crazy Johns in 2003. "

Yep, I think it's a stupid idea, having a sponsor rename a stadium. Commercialisation gone mad.

I get that its good fior the ground and can help pay for upkeep, stadiums and such but it becomes so souless. I can't bring myself to call them anything but Subiaco, Football Park or Kardinia Park. Homebush and Docklands are the exceptions, I guess because they have always been branded and are concrete shells with no life or spirit of their own (said having never been to Docklands). Plus I get a kick out of calling it Etihad Stadium because on some level it pisses off Eddie

I always get a smile out from listening to the ABC using their original (non commercial) names.

Docklands seems to have had the most changes:

How many from memory? no googling!

        Colonial something
        Optus ?
        Telstra Dome
        Etihad Stadium

Stupid name. If they went with Patersons, they should have stuck with Oval. Patersons Stadium is too hard to say with the two S sounds in a row.

Docklands only had a couple of former names... Colonial Stadium, Telstra Dome and now Etihad Stadium. Homebush started off as Stadium Australia, then Telstra Stadium, and now ANZ stadium.

Kardinia Park changed to Shell Stadium, then Baytec Stadium (for about 5 seconds), then Skilled Stadium.

I think the only ones that will resist the changes will be the test venues - SCG, WACA, Gabba, MCG and Adelaide Oval. Maybe Bellerieve as well.

177th Senior AFL Match - Round 4, 2009 - Sydney vs Carlton, SCG. This is obviously out of date. I suppose I'll update it once I could be bothered sitting down with the fixture and working it out....

An unfortunate reality, and I think I prefer to live with that than have to go to crappy venues. SCG facilities are an embarrassment to a beautiful ground.

What's REALLY bugging me is hearing about the 150th running of the "Emirates Melbourne Cup". No, it isn't!!

He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

I wonder how long before 'Patersons Curse' makes it's way into a headline. And they are purple as well!!!!

As for the name change, it's just a sign of the times.

It won't make an iota of difference of course, 95% of footy fans will still refer to it as 'Subi', as they currently do with Footy Park, Kardinia Park, Princes Park and the Docklands.

That's a good call - maybe three losses in a row for the home team would do it - or an injury to a key player (of any team) - might not be the greatest marketing coup if it makes traction with the media.

I reckon "Crazy Johns Oval" had a certain ring too it!

The stupid thing about this is that they will avoid using the "brand" names, but in news/finance etc they will always mention brand names.....a little hypocritcal IMO.

Yeah it is hysterically stupid. You can watch a story that goes on about Woolworths or ANZ, then suddenly in sport "At Football Park in Adelaide"...

The BBC call a stadium what it is called, so if it is Emirates or Reebok Stadium, they will say "We are crossing to Reebok Stadium". I have never got why the ABC don't do it, it's not an endorsement of the sponsor, it's simply the name of the stadium now! and in a lot of instances such as with Geelong and Adelaide/Port Adelaide have been the difference between a ground being successful or not.

As long as the ABC isn't taking money from a sponsor, I have NO idea how it can affect them?

Yep, I am a fan of sponsorships because of that reason. They are necessary these days.

Most people I know refer to the grounds as "ANZ, Etihad, AAMI", these days, so it seems to work well enough.

haha Agree on the Melbourne Cup thing, my father said a similiar thing to me when they said it was the 110th (or whatever) Toyota AFL Grand Final!
