The problem most people have is that he seems to have gone about it in a very strange and sneaky way, if he went to Geelong and said "I know I have a year left but I've had enough, want a p/t role and that may be happening at Essendon, thanks for the memories", I reckon Geelong would have let him go anyway.

Now all we are going to hear about is torn relationships, backroom deals, Essendon approaching a contracted coach, Hird lying, Thompson lying, Thompson being a hypocrite etc, when it could have just been a lot easier and should have been a lot easier for an 11 year double premiership coach that could have kept the job as long as he wanted.

Real shame how this has all gone.

I think you've hit the nail on the head there Damien.
It does happen all the time, in all forms of industry, but the Hird/Thompson partnership will forever be just a tad tarnished by the way it has come about, not because it came about.

Hird (who has never coached [or assistant coached] before is now the head coach at the dons.
Premiership coach Thompson is burnt out at the cats, so moves to the assistant's position at the dons, under Hird, who has never coached before.

Yep, most people don't rate not being upfront and straight forward. Getting out of a contract a year early due to being over it and tired and claiming that you have no intention of getting another footy job for the time being, doesn't exactly help your reputation with the wider public when you take up another footy job a few weeks later. The Geelong phone records of his conversations with Essendon dating back to July may hurt him a lot more in the long run though!

BFD. He didn't wanna be at the Cats for whatever reasons.
He got out with at least semi genuine reasons.
He's not full time coaching. Geelong should be happy about that and move on.

I was thinking the same thing on the way to work this morning while sitting in traffic. (How good it is to sit in traffic again!!)
Surely now Hird will just be Bomber's puppet? It's going to be real hard for Bomber to "step down". I hope Hird can take criticism, otherwise the dons are in deep @@@@. I hope their personalities don't clash.
I hope they have the problems I foresee.

Does James Hird, Bomber Thompson, Watson and Son, etc etc etc all converging at essendon at once have a sort of "supergroup" marketing smell to it? Is it like Yoko Ono and John Lennon forming "The Plastic Ono Band"???? Is it a venture engineered by soulless corporate accountants? It looks promising on paper, It may yield a few interesting results, but will the main players run out of ideas before the end of the show and have to get someone to stand on stage half naked wailing into a microphone like a strangled cat just to keep the punters interested?
