We have a list of 40 players + rookies.
In that list we require forwards, backs, utilities, midfielders, young, old, developing, mature.
In 2011 some will be first choice, some will be groomed to be first choice and others will be back-up.
If the club feels that over the entire list of 40 plus players that it has enough developing KP talls and wants some futher insurance cover for this year and the next, then so what.
It's remarkable that we can spend so much time on her bitching about such a minor decision, when we have just drafted another 3 young kids to the 4 we drafted last year who will have the final say on where our club will be in 3 years time than Spangher ever will.
For the record, out of the smalll amount of mature aged players in the country capable of playing some decent back-up football in a KP defender role he was about the best around.

What do folks want a list of 18 - 20 year old that is constantly turned over.. in search of the elusive starspriteComment

?You would expect O?Loughlin to have a little bit more footy smarts over Spangher and a little bit more strength, but I know who?s more likely to play in an AFL premiership right at this point.?
And yes that was the match Hall knocked out Staker.Comment

Longmire talks about the selection of Spangher and how it will help our depth and how our defenders are not getting any younger

The way some people are going on you would think pick 73 would get us an absolute gun. Most players around this range dont ever play a senior game, and the ones that do make it often need time to develop and are better off to be rookie selections. So given we wanted a ready made player - Spangher is a a very good selection at 73.
quite frankly I think Spangher at 73 is a pretty good deal. We got a grown up, and at the same time he is only 23, but a grownup in footy terms.. We got a big unit who is game fit. We got a guy who wants to come to Sydney and has already acknowledged this is the club that can help a bloke get the best out of himself. We got someone who has an ex teammate here who can be useful as an encouraging mentor. We also got someone I had rather thought in the past had a bit of "something", and for the life of me I cannot tell you why....just one of those things. And I like his face.
I mean, 73! Could be a bargain buy. Especially at this stage of player selectionLast edited by Primmy; 20 November 2010, 08:42 PM.If you've never jumped from one couch to the other to save yourself from lava then you didn't have a childhoodComment

Only if he gets games undeservedly. LRT, Grundy and Bolton will be picked if they're fit to play. Spangher, Reid, Everitt could all play key roles in defense if one of the former group goes down with an injury (or bad form rut for that matter) so the best performed of those in our reserves games should be in to the team. That's always going to be subjective and people will no doubt say oh man that guys clumsy or have no sympathy if he gets caught holding the ball cause everyone could clearly see he was about to get caught and he was just so damn slow. same things we're said of lrt. just like any other new draftee, he could never play a game for us. but he fits a criteria we need right now. also i think this means the end of richards in the eeniors. I think he should go to gws, he still he has a lot to offer a footy club.Comment

So...just to prove how right I was with my "West Coast is toxic under Worsfold" comment.....notice that the article is headlined 'I have faith in players" in which he specifically references 3 players who he de-listed within 2 years (Spangher, McKinley and MacNamara). I always thought he was complete pooh as a coach...never gotten over his pig-headedness at not putting a spare man back even with a minute to go in the 2006 QF...what a dunce. Perfect case of winning a Cup "in spite" of the coach. A tough/cheaty bastard as a player...first one picked (gulp - except for the '94 GF :-) ) but has no feel for people (IMHO!!!!!) just the same as a similar player in Voss. Only difference is Voss was not gifted as good a midfield as you will ever see."I'll acknowledge there are more talented teams in the competition but I won't acknowledge that there is a better team in the competition" Paul Roos March 2005Comment

The two articles explaining the reasons for Spanghers selection, looks to me like the drafting/coaching panel felt there was some explanation needed.
If he under performs, it's no biggy really.Comment
