    Collingwood vs Swans backline 2011

Just wondering how you think we stack up? and will we consider a floating "Maxwell" defender in 2011?

    Collingwood ?
B: Nick Maxwell, Nathan Brown, Alan Toovey
HB: Harry O'Brien, Ben Reid, Heath Shaw

    Sydney ?
    B: C.Bolton, Grundy, Smithy
    HB: Mal, LRT, Kennelly

    Maxwell vs ?
    Brown vs ?
    Toovey vs ?
    Harry vs ?
    Reid vs ?
    Shaw vs ?

With the exception of Reg and Smithy that backline does look very tired.

Craig Bolton back to something like his best is a walk-up start. I hope I'm wrong, but I don't think we'll see a lot of him this year. Teddy and Sam Reid will contest the spot, probably along with Spangher.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

The good thing about this situation is that there is lots of competition for spots. Here's hoping that means that if injury strikes again we can cover those losses easily and that every week we should have an inform backline. However there are going to be some very disapoointed senior swannies I think. Teddy and Marty most probably.

Yes, didn't think of Andrejs, he's certainly in the mix. Interesting to see who gets the gig. Nice problem to have.

I don't know why everyone thinks Marty will be the one forced out.
As far as our rebounding defenders go he is the one with the strongest defending skills. Irish and Eski are no where near as good one-one-one. I think that Eski needs to find himself some room the midfield.

This time next year we will possibly be without B2 and Irish, especially after winning their second premiership medallion . That would leave the backline possibilities as (oldest to youngest :
              1. Shaw
              2. Marty
              3. Teddy
              4. Hyphen
              5. Eski
              6. Reg
              7. Wrench (Spangher -> Spanner)
              8. Smiff
              9. Everitt
              10. Rooster
              11. Heath
              12. Reid
              13. AJ (if he bulks up considerably this year)

Now Shaw would by then a 60 goal/year forward so he's out.
Leaving: Reg, Smiff, LRT, Mattner, Richards (if he plays like the last 10 games of 2010), Everitt and Campbell.

Not a bad looking defensive six.
Richards v Maxwell (Teddy has a better side step)
LRT vs Brown (LRT is more mobile and but can not ruck as good as Brown))?
Mattner vToovey - Marty can run forward and kick a goal
Everitt vs Harry ??? who knows what Andrejs' will be
Reg vs Reid - close but our Reg is just a little bit better in every aspect.
Smiff vs Shaw - to quite different players, but defensively Smith always gets the job done.

There you go our 6 are better, without one bit of bias.

Are you getting your Browns mixed up? Nathan Brown doesn't ruck does he?

yep, I got them crossed over.
On stats alone LRT has it all over N Brown

Surely the interesting angle is how the matchups are for our defenders to the Collinwood attackers - and vice versa!

Don't want to sound like a wet blanket, but why are we concerning ourselves, (in November no less), about a game next June against the Pies which the Swans will certainly lose, as always?

It's not a match comparison, it's a list comparison: How does the Sydney Defensive line up look compared to the one that just won the Premiership?

Yeah but you want us to play only 18yr olds.

Nup, just players who aren't a long way past their peak like Tiger and Marty and C Bolts if not fully fit.
