    ... from little acorns grow

I didn't know this was going on. Are any of our expats involved? I like the idea of our game migrating to such exotic locations.

My ex father-in-law lives in Vietnam (as do many other Australians in their 60's and it has nothing to do with the climate) and he said that there was alot of AFL coverage in Vietnam and most of it was live.

During the World Cup 4 years ago, they were all soccer mad over there. Problem with aussie rules ever developing over there in the near future is that vietnamese males are rather scrawny in physique. However, the current Aussie males in their 60's are contributing to changing that genetic make-up long term.

I would think that our game would devlop in places like South Africa, USA and Ireland before it did in South East Asia.

Yes, footy is alive and well in Asia.

You will recall the Kaspersky Cup that was played in Shanghai between Melbourne and Brisbane in October 2010? The day before, the 11th Annual Asian Championships was played. 12 countries competed and Dubai beat Singapore in the Grand Final of the lightening premiership.

The Vietnam Swans were formed in 2003 and are really gaining some momentum. We are predominantly Australian expats from all walks of life. However, we also attract a wide range of other nationalities including Vietnamese.

We launched the ANZAC Friendship Match this year. We played it in Vung Tau (90 minutes from Saigon) which was the site of the Australian logistics base during the Vietnam War. Three weeks after we played our match at the Vung Tau Dog Racing Track, we received an email from a guy called Stan Middleton. Stan told us that during 1968/69 they played full-on Aussie Rules matches at the very same place as us - but then, it was called the Lord Mayor's Oval.

In July of this year, the Sydney Swans invited the Vietnam Swans and Vietnam Veterans to the prematch function of the Melbourne V Sydney match at the MCG. Fantastic day.

We are extremely confident that this Friendship Match will become a major event and will grow in importance each year. If you would like to know more, click here.

To see a quick snap shot of what the Vietnam Swans have been doing, have a look at the titles of our photo albums at our on line album.

Footy is alive and well in Asia - especially Vietnam.

They should have invited you to fill-in for the day.
