    Rest assured

    As is my want when it is a) raining, b) finished bargain hunting, c) have left overs to be consumed, d) lazy as all get out, I scrabble through the old dvds and yesterday I came up against a 2005 mid season game, us against Geelong.

    Fascinating to watch. Peb had long hair, Tadgh had hair, so did Gary Jnr (as they kept referring to him), Leo was there, BBB and Mickey and Jason Ball, etc etc etc. Kirky looked no different, Adam wasn't as big (!), Monty played his guts out.

    It was all different to now and it was only five and a half years ago. I would say about 20% of the team is the same now. Nearly all the others are retired, not that many went on to play elsewhere. Its not only the game that is fluid, its the players in the game.

    The only thing that remains the same is us. On the outer conserving our energy and wearing our versions of red and white. We are the constant, year in year out. No wonder we have the emotional stake in the game. It came home to me with great clarity that the players are disposable. I know, I know, we all know that. But I think that game I watched really hammered it home. They were talking up yhoung Geelong players that I don't think had another season. They talked up Swans players that had only one more, that were gone in no time at all.

    I think I am quite happy being up in the Noble Stand, and not down on the grass. Its considerably safer, and has a faaar greater longevity.

    Love that game...isn't that the one where we kick about 7 to the Paddington end in the 2nd quarter? Also Amon pantses Gazza a couple of times....for one brief season he was the better player!

      Yes that is the one. Its a great exponent of why we won at the final bell in September 2005. The boys worked together so well.

        There is no secret that in any team code that players are just part of a larger meat market. The better meat gets the greater spoils and the lower grade meat ends up in sausages.

        Good players can get alot of glory and money before they retire and become one of us. Even poor ones can still do well. So they have greater options and therefore much more to gain than the person sitting in the outer on their plastic seat watching them.

        Perhaps many supporters are consistent because:

        (a) they really love watching and following a game as part of a balanced lifestyle;
        (b) it gives them an opportunity to go out and socialize.
        (c) it helps some people with not being lonely; or
        (d) it gives some people an identity and self worth in an unbalanced life.

        Since first starting to follow the Swans in 2006, I've probably gone through all stages of the above at some stage or the other. In terms of the commentary, things never change.

          As Seinfeld said, the players change clubs, the outfits remain the same: we're just barracking for their clothes.
