Given I'm not a player nor one who is privy to the inner sanctum, I think you're asking the wrong person. The inner sanctum is where the captain should work, as the media is chiefly the responsibilty of the coach, and if a player is required one is trotted out by the club's PR department. Bolton's reign as a captain is for the players to judge; for anyone else to do so I find quite farcical.10100111001 ;-)Comment

My only issue with the captaincy is that I'm a little old school and would have preferred the one captain but since the multiple captain model hasn't had a negative effect on the club, I haven't minded. As for who they choose, I agree with the sentiments that's it's entirely an issue for the club since they know more about the leadership capabilities of a particular player than we do...And the Swans are the Premiers...The Ultimate Team...The Ultimate Warriors. They have overcome the highly fancied Hawks in brilliant style. Sydney the 2012 Premiers - Gerard Whately ABC

That hardly makes him worthy of captaincy. And TBH, I'm not a fan of Goodes being captain either. He's probably our best player, but is he captain material?Comment

I'd nominate a captain based on leadership ability. Not their skills on the field. Of course I have no idea what these guys are like in the inner sanctum (Neither does anyone else here), but the players that personify leadership from what I've seen of the current group are;
J Bolton
K Jack
N Malceski
J Kennedy
B McGlynn
N Smith
You could throw ROK into that mix but he's in the same category as Goodes. Great player, maybe not a captain though.
Players I wouldn't consider based purely on age are;
Hanners
&
Rohan
But either one of these will be future captains.Last edited by reigning premier; 21 January 2011, 10:17 AM.Comment

What characteristics off-field do these footballer show that personifies captain material?

Not really interested in off field charateristics. Sure, they have to be representative of the club at times but I wouldn't be picking a captain because he gets involved in curing cancer!! His job is to lead men on a footy field. Not be a nice bloke.Comment

Agree. Leadership is almost an inate talent. Some people are born leaders and in sport we need the "real" natural born leaders whom people willingly follow. Kirk is a great example. He generated respect from everyone,coaches,peers and rookies as well as the press. He did this "on the field" and the after match stuff was just a bonus. I think our political leaders are almost the exact opposite of good leadership,having got to power by devious means , hence the average persons frustration with them. In Footy there are guys that just have to be captain,they nominate themselves and the players know who they are.Comment
