2010 Rate the Season: #38 Mike Pyke

    Canada, oh Canada.
    Thanks for giving us Mike.

If I just started watching this game, I wouldn't believe the person who would be trying to tell me that Mike Pyke is Canadian and never played AFL till he got here.

Wild speculation, unsubstantiated rumours, silly jokes and opposition delight in another's failures is what makes an internet forum fun.
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones who let in the light.

Even the commentators thought he was Mummy.

9 - would have gotten a 10 he had kicked that goal. I hope there is room for him in this years team.

On what was expected of him 12 months ago - 9. On his overall contribution as the 2nd Ruck - 7.

            8 for Pykey from me.

An 8 for the amazing Big Mike.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

5 - If I was to rate him based on his improvement he would've got a 9. However, based on his input compared to other players on the list he gets a 5.

Showed glimpses of very good football. Not enough consistency (yet). 2011 will be his year.

A huge success story. He was very important in the great finals win against the Blues, and blokes who produce when the heat is on are the blokes you want. I wouldn't (quite) say No Pyke No Win but such a comment would actually be defensible - which would have been inconceivable 12 months earlier. I'm really looking forward to seeing if his improvement can continue in 2011.
                  8/10 from me

If you guys objectively think Pyke's 2010 was an 8 then you must be enjoying Jamaica's latest shipment.

The guy showed something yes, but he would not make the top 300 players in the AFL.

Ranked 296 by FinalSiren.com on 2010 stats. Quite a way ahead of some bigger named ruckmen eg Kepler Bradley, Will Minson, Wade Skipper ect.... and he's only going to get better.

My apologies.....those guys you listed are clearly only 7.8/10 ruckmen

Hmmm, what a frightfully earnest post. At the risk of stating the obvious, these sorts of scores must always involve a judgement not only about about the player's performance, but also expectations about that player, their potential and stage of development. If it was all totally based on ruthlessly objective cross-AFL standards, then for midfielders you'd give Dane Swan a 9 (because of course there is no such thing as absolute perfection) and most other midfielders would therefore be lucky to crack a 7-8. But of course we are all happy to give Kizza an 8- 9 as well for last year, even though he is not yet that close to Swan. For the same reason, I'm very comfortable giving the big Pyke an 8. He played far beyond expectations and did some great things for a guy of 2 season's experience. But if he plays the same this season as he did in 2010 he would probably only get a 6.
                            Lighten up.
