AFL v NRL TV rights battle

Duelling TV networks may double NRL's take

I haven't been following this at all except to notice that Roy Master keeps writing that NRL is going to get as much as AFL for the TV rights this time around.
    The key things are:
    1) there's no bidding war between Seven and Nine for the AFL rights.
    2) Seven may bid for the League rights

Meaning the NRL is set for a big payday, while the AFL will have to settle for whatever Seven feels like.

We'll know shortly if Roy is right on the money (literally) or is a goose.

Roy is a goose whether he is right or not.

Second, so what difference does it make to anyone. With the current rights, you get little coverage of AFL in Sydney and therefore need to subscribe to Foxtel.

People don't go to the NRL and watch it on telly. It would make more sense that they attract more money because the station can attract more money in selling commercial space.

The people such as Roy the goose, who are saying bigger tv rights equals better game are simply delusional.

Roy didn't cut it much as either a school teacher or ARL coach so his efforts as a "journolist" are not that much better.

Roy's a dill. His columns are repetititive and overlook the same issues time and time again. The AFL have rules that mean FTA networks screen matches in home cities on FTA, even if they are on Pay in other states. That means the Pay audience is split and that most people will watch their local team on FTA. Therefor, AFL ratings are lower on Fox because the matches almost always involve non-local teams (for non-Victorian viewers anyway) or are occasionally screening the same game that FTA is screening. Did I explain that right? I'm in an airline lounge sipping a Chivas Regal so I hope I'm making sense! :-)

I have a lot of other observations about it that all add up to why he's a dill but I don't want to go into generalisations (even if they're true) or make it an NRL v AFL thing (which it isn't).

Anyway, now Sam Ayoub and John Elias have been arrested it could change everything.

Huh? How would this "scandal" have any effect on what the AFL receives from it's next TV deal? How will it have any effect on what the NRL receives for that matter?

I think he meant he was going to get a Johnny Walker Black.

Sitting in my home office, sipping a post-breakfast port, I came across Caro 's totally different account: the AFL "looks certain" to get a billion big ones.

Either she or Roy is going to look like a dill.

I don't get Roy's obsession with the AFL TV Rights. However this notion that circulates in League circles that NRL audiences are higher than AFL are a lie. AFL beat the NRL in overall TV audiences each year, (Rugby League as a code occasionally is higher when State of Origin in factored in to the overall number). NRL's bonus is of course that they dominate the biggest market (Sydney).

Roy's idea that 9 isn't interested in the TV rights is silly too, C7 have dominated the national TV ratings every year since they won back the rights and the AFL are in a better position for these rights anyway than the NRL because of Foxtel's low subscriber base in the AFL states compared to reasonably high subscriber rates in the NRL states.

Spot on on all counts Damien.

Swanage - I was just trolling in truth. The fact that I was in the airline lounge on the sauce had nothing to do with it...
