    A shot after the siren?

Just wondering what people's thoughts are when a player takes a mark or receives a free kick just before the final siren and they are potentially within kicking distance. Should they have a shot after the siren (regardless whether the team won or lost) just in case % comes into it at the end of the season? It would be fairly (or should that be rediculously) slim that a point or a goal after the siren in round 2 would make or break a season, but what if it did?

I think players would always have a shot after the siren. Even when they are outside 50. Go the torp, and hope for the best.

I felt like lining up for about 10 shots at the Bar in those last 5 minutes of the game.

IMO - shoot for goal. It all counts at the end of Rd 22.

Hanners didn't today. Kicked the ball straight up in the air on the siren - facing the wrong way - and he looked to be about 55-60m out. Big ask, I know.

No way he would have made the distance, Hanners ran himself ragged in the last.

No, no. 'course not. As I said, I doubt a behind, or even a goal would make much of a dent in the % at the business end of the season anyway. Was just wondering.

He was 70m out so no where near kicking distance.

However if the player is within kicking distance then he definitely should have a crack after the siren.

If you think you're even a half-chance of scoring then go for it. Besides a bit of face if you fail to score what have you got to lose?

                      Always good for evidence

Turns out Barry Hall is the only player to kick a goal after the siren to win the game twice - St Kilda v Hawthorn, R22 2001 (his last for the Saints) and Sydney v Brisbane R3 2005. The VFL/AFL list of shots after the siren to win/draw the game (both successful and valiant attempts) is listed *here*.

Brad Johnson also had two opportunities - but missed both times.

I think hanners was too scared to go for the torp, because of the repercussions he would receive from Bradshaw. It would have definitely been better than braddles.
