Paul Roos - The Truth about Ugly Footy

I think this bit said it all, something I've often thought was more the case.
One of the greatest misconceptions about the Swans was that we were a flooding team. Like all teams, there were stages of the game where we had numbers in our defensive 50, but we demanded a one-on-one philosophy when the opposition won the ball.

This week Roos tackles the unsung heroes.

So here are three other names I'll throw in from that premiership season: Lewis Roberts-Thomson, Amon Buchanan and Nic Fosdike.

Throughout 2005, Roberts-Thomson was our cornerstone at centre half-back, usually taking the opposition's best power forward. Buchanan filled the role of pressure half-forward and occasional pinch-hitting midfielder. Fosdike could rotate between being a lock-down midfielder and one who could gather 30-plus possessions.

The importance of all three was underlined in the big game and each would not have been out of place winning the Norm Smith Medal. Yet their contributions in that game, and that season, remain largely underrated.
We've debated long and hard about those 3 and the Norm Smith since 2005.
We all thought one of them should've had it, not Judd.

That HS article is pretty good.

    Raises two points fairly clearly.

    1. I've always been a supporter of Demetriou, but how dare he ring and AFL coach and 'suggest' that a game plan is not something the AFL want.
How damn controlling does he think he can be. Think I'm more outraged by that now than when it happened.

    2. Redemption in all of the crap we copped re- game plan and then went on to win the flag as Roos said - in what is regarded by many as one of the best grand finals ever.
    Fond memories.

Good to see Roosie rubbing it in

In his articles, Roosy is starting to let slip the players he was chasing but failed to bring to the Swans. We had Brad Miller previously, now he reveals he wanted McVeigh senior in the red and white.

I really like LRT, and he was fantastic in that Grand Final- but I think Roos is being a little generous in regards to LRT's whole 2005 season.
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time

I think that was pretty well known, though? Didn't it get to the point of rumoured attendance at Driver Avenue by McVeigh senior in the leadup to trade week one year?

I wouldn't say generous, even a little, he's simply saying what LRT's role was. And I think it's fair to say that on the whole he did a good job - not that I can recall any of the details now, except for his outstanding GF.
Both articles are an interesting read.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

              Indeed

hat much was never clearer than in the 2005 semi-final. Geelong led until late in the final quarter, when Nick Davis jagged a remarkable goal with seconds to play. Had Nick spilled that Jason Ball hitout, had his shot not squeezed through, then you can bet the football world would have jumped all over me as coach of the team that had managed just six goals in a final.

              Sorry Nick.

Two weeks later we won the Grand Final. Ironi......
I agree with Stella's assessment of LRT's year....

The important thing is that he mentioned Monty. Whose face after he kicked the goal that got us ahead in the First Place is a sight I have imprinted into my brain. He was brilliant. And that is a fact that should never be forgotten.

More important than the goal were the amount of times he sprinted to punch the ball away from an eagles player. Ran himslef ragged that day.

he did his role, but i think he has been a lot better player since that grand final, it felt that day he pulled one out of the bag, where as he can do that way more often now IMHO. Was only new to the role in 2005.

I think Buch's should have been the Norm Smith. His last qtr was huge. I might be a bit biased as i had $20 on him at 71.00. Still hurts

He's the one I would have picked too.
