Here we have an opportunity to play a match while 100,000 people are in the area. It's an opportunity the AFL should definetly take. People who have religious convictions can then have the choice of attending or not.
That is exactly right. Freedom of choice it is. Unfortunately in most more modern and fundamental religions like the evangelicals, mormons, adventists, hillsong and others of that fundamental nature, they TELL YOU what to do and think. Oh and don't forget the donation naturally.

I think this thread in terms of religion is now starting to go around in circles. Agree to disagree and back to the game.

I was at the Easter Show yesterday and apart from the physical construction, the drainage is non existant. I ran into a friend who is working there with the company that does the event management and he was saying come Thursday, all the re-development work commences. Apparently the kitty is about $25 million now.

One thing that struck me about the ground when at the show was just how destroyed the playing field will be up until mid-April every year. Does anyone now how soon after the show they plan to use it each year?

I was left thinking they may have opted for a ground that will be out of action for around 1/4 of the season every year- I guess they can get around that to some extent by maybe playing there round 1 or 2, then in the next 6 weeks making sure they have a bye + 1 game across the road + a few away games?
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time

I thought the same thing. I was running through my head when watching the polo just how much of a beating that turf would take at the show each year, and it's not pretty. Regular polo, showjumping, stuntcar drivers, the Grand Parade... that turf will be unrecognisable.

But at least it won't have a cricket pitch in the middle of it all summer?

They also have to play 3 games in Canberra, so they can use up a home game down there.

Whatever moral questions surround playing on Good Friday, the concept has the support of the Swans:

We don't have to lose - coach pushes his players to reverse post-bye trend

With the support of both the Giants and the Swans, I think a derby on Good Friday is likely to happen.

Good point! So if you think it's out of commission for 6 weeks (show prep. show, ground recovery) out of 24 they could make sure to schedule 1 * Bye, 1 * ANZ, 1 * Canberra, 3 * away and it doesn't look all that bad. Still wouldn't want to be a fan of the first team to run around on that field first time up after the show has destroyed it!

I believe the last time the Easter Show was at Moore Park - next to the SCG - was in 1997.

I still reckon it would be a terrific idea to play - and to those who feel that Good friday should be left alone I put this too you.

Should a game eventually be played on good Friday those who have strong religious beliefs will actually have two choices - you either attend or you dont.

However, as it stands now and as no AFL game is being played on good Friday - we, the non religous footy fan, have no choice - we get nothing.

If the religious crowd are wanting a ban all on good friday activities, then lets take it a step further, then shut the country down completely - airports, public transport, all shops (because pretty much all hot bread & Fish & chips shops were open on Good friday), the Show, service stations, roads, ban the use of cars as well - if thats the way of thinking why should footy be the only thing exempt??

I dont think it says anywhere in the bible "thou shall not go to the footy on Good Friday" - the NRL do it an no one says a thing - so why should the AFL be any different?
I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not so sure..................

Because the AFL likes to think of itself as holier-than-thou?
