A Collingwood chant going up around the ground was embarrassing. They may be feral, however at least they are loud and can support their team. They are even far better organised at getting a simple chant going. We seem to have the clap clap clap bit down pat, but when it comes to yelling out "Sydney", there is @@@@ all.

Obviously Sydney is a fickle market and maybe it needs to start within the cheer squad? I know at the moment it is looked upon as a collection of society's rejects. This must change.

A home game in Sydney is far from a fortress.

I've been to Rd 1 against Melbourne and Carlton last week as well as the usual selection of home games in Sydney and away at Subiaco as well against WCE. I certainly haven't felt that there is a lack of passion, chanting banter etc at the home games compared to the matches in Melbourne. To be honest, the Swans fans that gave the best effort I've heard so far this year was the 500 or so at the Wet Coke game. Atmosphere was electric and everyone spent the night right behind the team and I think really did help get us over the line. Certainly the best slow Sydney chant I've heard for a long while went up in the last couple of minutes of the game.
Our Perth supporters are some of the best & most loyal fans we have. As somebody who organises the support when I can afford to go over, Perth is actually the easiest away trip to organise. Just a shame that they have 1m flag limits making getting decent sided flags in near impossible.

Once again we have people saying the support has to improve. Once again we have people saying it has to start with the cheer squad. But who is offering to help? Who is prepared to help Alex get chants going? NONE of you, that's who. It is all & well saying things have to get better. Talk is very very cheap peoples!

I'm pleased I don't have to deal any more with the sniggers I got from the white collar chattering women who used to sit in 118-119 at Homebush. I tried to start chants & got patronising from many of them game after game year after year. At the Freo prelim final in 06 we got outsung by 100 travelling Freo fans FFS!

The frustrating thing is that against Carlton in the semi final the chanting was better than anything anywhere else in the AFL. I started chants in 119 and nearly EVERYONE was not only joining in, but was actually standing & using their clappers in time. It was totally mental! Why are things so inconsistent in Sydney?!

Watch for the game in Adelaide next week. Not only will we have all the big flags flying, you will hear the chants & songs as loud as day. Us being there will actually get the Crows people going as well.

We brought in a drum. The AFL banned it.
We wave big flags. The AFL Cheer Squads league has tried everything under the sun to get them banned, and have failed
We tried to sing Barmy Army style songs in the Cheer Squad. I had a member of the Sydney club office ringing up to have a go at me, threatening me with cancelling my membership.

When I can do all of these things at Melbourne Storm games & none at the AFL, you wonder why I am somewhat disillusioned with being an active supporter in the AFL any more. Me and one of my friends from Port Adelaide Cheer Squad have started a Facebook group to try and encourage the dying art of active support. Participants are more than welcome to join us.

Meanwhile when Sydney FC play in the A-League, we get support like this! (And you wonder why I'm football first these days. I get this every week!)

Can you stop waving that flag, I didn't come to footy to have my view of the umpire running the ball back to the cente square obscured. And stop being so loud.

Just to clarify - when I said put the Poms in charge of the cheer squad, I actually didn't mean to refer to the Cheer Squad. I probably should have just said the cheers - around the ground, amongst the general fans...

As someone that has gone to more than a fair share of premier league games over there, the Poms certainly know how to cheer their teams on! When you have a tight, tough match with a lot on the line, its just 90 minutes of cheering from both sets of supporters with fantastic chants, songs and just supporting the team to the hilt. It really is an experience in itself when its good. but like here, some games I went to there was just absolutely no atmosphere.

The Germans are also pretty crazy as well - I suggest we recruit a few of them as well!

I like to go to the football to watch the football, I happily cheer in whatever way I like and must admit I'm relatively indifferent to how others cheer- my main interest in performance is that of the players, secondary is that of the pie warmers. It works well.

The support in WA is amazing. No argument here. Re read my posts and I mention that every time I'm there.

Last night the Collingwood chant was better and louder then anything we have.
