Tackle a wimp - Pay the price

So here it is, the AFL have stated, if you tackle a wimp, you'll get pinged. If you tackle a tough guy, with no brains, you'll get off.

AFL players have been left with the lingering view they can sling-tackle opponents heavily into the ground as long as they don't injure them, in the wake of the match review panel's decision yesterday to clear Jack Trengove of an almost identical tackle to that which cost him a three-match ban earlier this year.

The main difference in Trengove's tackle on Western Bulldog Callan Ward at Etihad Stadium on Friday night, compared with his tackle on Adelaide's Patrick Dangerfield, is that Ward got up and played on.

Dangerfield was left groggy and substituted out of the game.

Anyone that has to face the mrp on a slinging charge just needs to bring the Trengove tackle as evidence, and then ask what is the difference between what they are charged with and what Trengove did.

Proof positive that the lawyers have more influence that past players?
Could it get any more stupid?

Not sure that will make any difference. The AFL has not shied away from the fact that it is outcome that matters, not intent, in the case of these tackles.

I would love for a player charged with another offence (eg striking or rough play) to argue that because their action caused no injury, they should face no sanction.

That is where the MRP is fundamently flawed IMHO, the intent to injure a player should be the main factor not the fact that a player gets up and plays on.

It's unrealistic to think that the AFL are going to eliminate every bad tackle from the game, however, does the approach the MRP take of considering the impact of the action encourage better skill execution and also takes into consideration that impact within the game on the opposing team and seeks to address that?
