    Swans TV Inventing New Words

I have just been looking at Swans TV Play of the Day & the person who wrote the story has been very linguistically inventive. The quote is "These are the words of FOX Sports Commentator, Matthew Campbell as he SUMMATED a brilliant passage of play". This is not the first time I have noticed words being invented on Swans TV & also in the General Media. The spell check was evidently following the example of my spell check & not working. Luckily got mine working again by downloading a new dictionary. I hope Swans TV do the same quickly.

Let me get this straight Mr BA in writing, you think 'summated' isn't a word?

American dictionaries will include anything, so don't quote Mirriam Webster.

I've used 'summation' hundreds of time in my work, so it stands to reason 'summated' must also be a word.

Unless of course my use of the word 'summation' is wrong and I just pulled it out of my clacker one day .... entirely possible

Summation is a word. It doesn't follow that summated is a word. And it's not. (English language just likes to consummate with us.) After you finish your summation, you could be said to have summed up, but not to have summated.

BTW, I think he really meant that he summarised a passage of play, leaving out details to describe the gist of it, which is not actually the same thing as to deliver a summation of a passage of play, which would be to encapsulate the whole of it.

Fair enough, sorry Wolfy, you have my apologies.

If only the silly journo could have just used 'summarised', we could have avoided all this...

In the last twenty years there seems to have been a flourish of new words being invented by journalists and writers or indeed by the general public as slang. Indeed many of these words have ended up in the dictionary but summated is not one of them. The Journos don't seem to look at the spell check & the Subies & Editors should be ashamed to print some of the stuff in the Newspapers, especially the News Corp papers. Here I sometimes don't spell check as it saves time not to when I am emotional about a subject like my footy team. But I do write & am indeed in my second year of a BA in Writing at MacQuarie and I must say it does interest me to read the Journo inventions. I think it is very amusing and illuminating that people who are trying to influence our opinion can't even spell.

Summated is a perfectly cromulent word.

One of the beauties of language is that it is an organic creation, and that new words can be, and are, created all the time. Sometimes they are used as a one-off, other times they become part of the fabric of the language by repeated use and eventually become accepted as a "real word". I love creating non-words by combining two existing "real words". If it is obvious what a created word means, I don't see there is an issue with this. It just adds more colour and playfulness to language.

The test here should surely be whether it was understood what was meant by using this "non-word" "summated". I think most would say it was understood. Hence I don't see there is an issue with it.

I think the real issue here is that on the Website they purport that Matthew Campbell, in his summation, uses the words,
Terrific stuff Sydney. Starts with Shaw, ends with Bird - deserves a goal
                            when in fact he says,
