    Swans great trade deal

Has there ever been a more lopsided trade deal than the John Pitura swap in the mid 70"s.
Pitura an exciting flanker with the Swans was being relentlessly pursued by Richmond, and after two years was eventually released by the club.In exchange the Swans received Brian [The Whale] Roberts, Graham Teasdale , and Francis Jackson.
Roberts finished 6th in the75 Bronlow in his first season, unfortunately leaving after a dispute with the commitee.
Teasdale won the Brownlow in 77plus Vic representation and other achievements.and played 141 games with the club
Jackson was a stalwart in defence over many years, playing 100 games
Pitura had a disappointing career with Richmond playing only 40 games over3 years before leaving to coach in the country

We certainly did extremely well out of the Pitura deal! The Whale was fantastic, Teaser's Brownlow year was magnificent and Jackson was a terrific player for us for an extended period of time. However, we were on the receiving end when we gave Terry and, I think, Neale Daniher to Essendon in return for Neville Fields. Fields played very well for us but was nowhere near as much value as the Danihers were to Essendon.

It didnt look too bad at the time. Terry"s game improved a couple of notches at Essendon and Neil unfortunately had a short career, but we did get good service from Fields.Letting Carey and Longmire go was the biggest blunder

I think too that Roberts only played 17 games that season so to finish second was pretty impressive.

Teaser was my favourite player of all time (just ahead od Tony and Paul Morwood), I had his number on my back from the moment he arrived at the club.

The year Teaser won the Brownlow remains the greatest performance by a player - that I have seen live (didn't see all games but prob 16 or so). He just dominated and took at least 2 speccies a game.

A lazy 17 goals in the first 2 rounds before Stewie decided he wasn't a full forward!

The speccie in round 22 against North always stays in my mind. There is a life size photo of it in the motel in Charlton (if it is still there after the floods this year) as it was his home town.

He was such a prodigious kick. I saw him kick a post high goal from inside the centre square of the MCG and kick a point (one bounce) from the wing at the Junction Oval.

Terry Wallace and Barry Rowlings from the Hawks both played well for Richmond although Wallace only played 11 games due to a back injury. Wallace left Richmond to go to Footscray the next year so maybe he wasn't such a good risk but Rowlings played well for the Tigers for 9 years winning the Jack Dyer Medal for B&F.

Didn't Stewart from the Saints win a Brownlow at Richmond? Although I think they gave up Billy Barrot??
I'm happy to be corrected here..my memory is a bit dodgy sometimes.

We ended up with Stewie, which has to be a massive win for us. Who did we trade for him>? Or was he a free agent.?

                        Yep.

Gave away Jeff Hogg when his knees were already shot, and received Paul Broderick, Matthew (?) Dundas and Michael Gale.

But... the worst trade of all time?

                        Worst trade ever?

That's easy. Pick 16 and 46 to Geelong for Carlton to get Stephen O'Reilly who played 12games. AND Carlton had to pay him illegally outside the cap. AND he blew the whistle. AND Carlton had to pay a fine. AND Carlton got kicked out of the draft and had to recruit hacks. AND it meant that the multi-million investment in Denis Pagan was a waste because he had no players.

                        Stephen O'Reilly for - Pick 16, pick 46, $1m fine, pick 1, 2, 17 and 33 in the 2003 draft, pick 1 in the 2003 PSD, 1st and 2nd round picks in the 2004 draft.

I reckon that would have the Pitura trade covered by a couple of laps of Flemington, then a trip down the highway for a run round Caulfield, before a backtrack to run the length of the Moone Valley straight.

Carlton then decided tanking was a GOOD THING. (Not that tanking occurs of course....)

What a hoot - especially with Carlton involved. Do you do standup?
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)
