    Interesting weekend footie articles

Enjoyed reading both of these. First, a game day with the umpires - interesting read, whatever you think of them!

Rohan Connolly is given rare matchday access behind the scenes with the umpires.

And second, part 1 of 2, on expansion of AFL into western Sydney.

IF THE AFL was looking for a pin-up idol as it spreads its tentacles into greater western Sydney, then Gillian O'Riordan could be the woman. When the Campbelltown born-and-bred O'Riordan, 47, grew up, rugby league was the go. ''If you so much spoke about AFL [then VFL] it was looked down upon,'' O'Riordan says.

    1. The umps are interesting; there's little mention of Chamberlain, and the ugly parents figure a bit.
    2. On the AFL's expansion, interesting to see the difference between the official line by Tom Harley - GWS is big, plenty of room for Rl and AFL - and the local's line - we'll shake the RL up a bit. I think both may be right! And Phil Gould sounds outright paranoid.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)
