The free was definitely not there and they said that on the commentary too ... However once the free had been paid (wrongly!) the 50m penalty probably was there as Tadhg made an effort to not give the ball to the Saints player. Whether he knew he had been penalized or not, they know they have to give the ball back immediately. More than anything it's a ridiculously umpired rule across the board because it's so confusing ... They need to simplify it so umpires and players know how it is decided.

The rules are sooooo subjective that it will always seen as "technically" correct, he probably did have the ball in his arms for about a half a second and therefore technically either dropped the ball or incorrectly disposed of it. Granted this remains entirely inconsistent with the intent of this rule and inconsistent with the interpretation given to others (eg murphy, judd etc that are allowed to do full 360s before doing anything with it).
In contrast the fifty was "technically" wrong as he theorectically would also have given away fifty for handing it to the wrong man in schneider who wasnt the person entitled to take the free. You arent required to give the ball back to anyone , just the player who is awarded the free so "technically" tadgh did no wrong on the fifty metre issue.Comment

at the game i thought it was no free but clearly fifty. what was incredibly frustrating was that the first two goals the saints kicked in the third quarter to get back into it involved almost identical things to swans situations - namely milne got tackled and dropped the ball and play on was called and riewoldt kicked his snap and then AJ threw the ball (and he clearly did) and was penalised and seconds later mcevoy also threw the ball out of a tackle for someone to kick to kosi to mark.
as always the issue is not the ones they call but the ones they dont leading to clear inconsistencies.Comment

It seems Ray's umpiring record this year hasn't gone completely unnoticed.
He's been overlooked for the GF umpire because of his inconsistency - surely umpirespeak for screwing up.
"In Ray's case, he was part of the preliminary final panel and was down to the last six. He'd be disappointed to miss today, but the bottom line is he was ranked under these guys and his season wasn't quite as consistent as these guys. He would know that," Gieschen said. The man who laughs has not yet heard the terrible newsComment

I wonder if the AFL has had a look at his record in umpiring games to produce a strange mix of rage and boredom. His job in the Eagles game was typical. IE "want to wreck a game of footy? - Ray's your man".Comment
