Longmire proves right man to lead Swans

Credit where credit is due I reckon. An excellent effort by a first year coach. Will be interesting to see him grow and develop as he gets more experience. Well done Horse!!

The inspiration behind the Swans' upset victory against Geelong at Skilled Stadium might have been the personal travails of midfielder Jarrad McVeigh. But, again, Longmire deserves rich praise for guiding his team through that difficult, potentially distracting, period.

Whether it has been the familiar voice of Longmire in a more authoritative role, a few positional switches (Bolton has excelled in attack) or some tweaking of a tried and trusted game plan to produce a less one-on-one base style and a more team-oriented defence, he has the Swans playing vibrant football at the right time. This after they seemed on the brink of elimination from the

Longmire will be judged successful if, and only if, he goes one better than last year.

The long and the short of it is, win tonight, and he's sucessful. Lose and we've treaded water.

I'm not unhappy with Horse, but coaches only have one measure of success and that is final ladder position.

I wish the world was this black and white but sadly it is not. Success is based and measured on many factors both internal and external.

We have managed to remain competitive while blooding and developing the youngsters that will take this club forward. I am super excited by the talent we are developing at this club and I can see exciting times ahead.

As far as I'm concerned ALL things considered, we have had a successful year. Basing success just on ladder position alone without taking into account any other factors is wrong in my view.

People forget we are one key Backman, and one Key Forward down.
We are now a top 6 team, possibly a top 4 team.

Great effort with 2 key players missing.

I disagree. I think Longmire has already done better than last year by blooding new players and planning for the future of the club, where Roos team was clearly aging and getting on. This current team is far more exciting and I have more optimism for the near future of the club; where with Roos I felt we had peaked and we're now becoming stagnant, or even declining.
Saying this however Longmire has improved dramatically throughout the year. Definitely looking forward to the next 2-3 yrs with him at the reins.

He's also integrated a host of young players into the team and yet we're at the same cross-roads as last year: a semi-final and a half-decent chance to win.

He hasn't been perfect, but the critics out there are deluded. What more do you expect from a rookie coach who has got a rebuilding team?

Thats a bit harsh, so your telling me if we are in the situation against the hawks like the essendon game earlier in the year to have a shot after the siren to win the game being 5 points down or whatever it was and we miss and lose, does that mean we've treaded water as opposed to been successful this year???? I think win, lose or draw it has been a success this season considering the performance of the team the past month or so and the further development of the younger players.

Lets not get carried away here.

For the last couple of years we have been tracking about equally with Carlton. And have been ahead of Carlton. This year they have progressed one step (winning a final), We need to better that.

While longmire has blooded some good kids, our ladder position is still very reliant on Goodes having a "brownlow" year, Teddy Richards playing his best year, and Jude Bolton playing his best

In fact I think you're mistaken. In my view beating St Kilda at Etihad rates in front of beating Carlton at ANZ, not to mention the other changes Horse has brought about. A win tonight would, in a sense, be a bonus. There, that should take the pressure off the boys, and Horse!
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

I know people will enter this thread with their pitchforks and torches burning but he's done okay imo. First year in charge, probably daunting at first and he was clearly learning the ropes early but he got the hang of it in the end and put his own structures in place.

2012 will be the true test in terms of putting his stamp on the club.
