Swans' appalling semi-final record

It struck with this season's semi final against Hawthorn what a terrible semi-final record the Swans have. Witness but for the Nick Davis miracle performance against Geelong in 2005, South/Sydney would have lost every single semi-final they've played in since World War II.

1970- St Kilda; 1986-Fitzroy; 1987- Melbourne; 1998-Adelaide;2004-St Kilda; 2008- Western Bulldogs; 2010- Western Bulldogs; 2011- Hawthorn

That's 1 win (in the last 3 seconds) and 8 losses.

The trick is to be a genuine top 4 side. Then you've got a better chance of winning the semi-final, if it comes to that.

I reckon if we'd won either or both of those grand finals, Doc Edelston would have been likened to Archie Crofts and the era would have marked the Swans as the Foreign Legion II

We had some ace players in 86/87 but our second tier was weak (viz Craig Holden etc) we lost a couple of players and that was it. The late miss from Tony Daniher of a 30 metre kick for goal in one of those didn't help...no wonder the Bombers moved him to fullback!

In this day and age of home finals, the '86/87 era may well have bought a lot more joy than it ultimately did if it existed back then...

Ditto! Craig Holden was a fine player and off field he was a thorough gentleman who made time for Swans supporters, talking to them no matter how old they were.

He served the Swans with distinction on and off the field: an 80 game player, State representative, All Australian and later Development Manager and a match committee member. A much deserved Sydney Swans Life Member. A true Swan!
