St Kilda has been the dissappointment of the AFL for years. Unlike the Roos and Hawks in the '70's the Saints never quite had what it took at a club level to finish the job off. They got there in 1971 and failed, again in 1997 fell short to Adelaide and soon after replaced coach Alves who had done so well. Infighting has been well documented especially the Butterss/Thomas stoush. The Malcolm Blight sacking was indicative of the way the club operated and didn't inspire confidence in any potential coaches. The final chance came with a very good coach in Lyon and two Gf appearances again falling short. They don't seem to have a winning attitude over the whole club. This is an attitude the Swans had to relearn after years in the bottom half of the ladder but we did it. The Saints have never been able to quite get there. These days there would have to be an investigation as to the sustainability of ten teams in Melbourne. I personally believe with Melbourne, St Kilda, North Melbourne, richmond & the bullies struggling at club and football level alternatively or consecutively there needs to be a rationalising of Melbourne teams.Didn't we do a straight swap of Berbakov for Tudor just a year ago?
Seems strange for coaches / staff to be jumping ship so soon after Lyon's departure. Is St Kilda in that much turmoil? Or did Lyon just have a "behind the scenes" charisma that didn't translate to his media appearances?
My solution is merge North/Bullies and Tigers/Demons, send the Saints south to Tassie and replace the current board with a management team until the club is in success mode & then give Tassies 1/2 board with AFL appointed directors.Comment
