i am stoked so far we have gambled on walsh vs LJ
9 games at the SCG will work better for Walsh and his bigger boddy then LJ............LJ maybe better in a few yrs but I suspect we went for 2012/2013 given our roster and hence walsh !"be tough, only when it gets tough"

And Brendan Murphy kicks the final over. Good game by Ealsh but we have to take into account he wasn't matched up on a key defenderComment

Leaving now, the Tommy Walsh bandwagon...
As the Irish set up an 18-point quarter-time lead, Walsh was taking marks with two players hanging off him and delivering deft soccer passes to teammates. As his side stretched its lead to 24 points by the half-time break, he was prominent again, a sharp lead, mark and three-point goal keeping Ireland clear as the Australians, scratchy whenever they got near the goals early, started to build a score.
By the end of the game - held up during the third term after a diving Mitch Robinson clashed heads with Ireland's Emmet Bolton - Walsh had scored three unders, taken nine marks, had 24 possessions and basically looked very good.

Walsh looked fantastic, knew where to run to and seemed to be able to get first hands to the ball in marking contests nearly every time. Great stuff!
Every time I see Tadhg play GAA or International Rules I am blown away at just how good he is.I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his timeComment

As for Walsh, he looks like he has a calm head on him as well as football talent. It was he who managed to pull Brendan Murphy out of the scrimmage when he looked like he was about to lose it, and forcibly marched him away from the action.Comment

Agree about Kennelly. For a guy that has spent most of the last decade playing with a Sherrin, his round ball skills were very impressive.

I thought he was excellent last night, good hands and knew where to find the ball.
Also, he's bigger and stronger than I expected.
My thoughts are only tempered a bit by the great game Tadhg played.
He dominated last night, but was found out in the season just finished as too slow to the ball and indecisive compared to his great years at the swans.
I just hope the international form from Walsh transfers to the SCG.Comment

I won't be on the Walsh bandwagon until I see him actually play AFL footy. I'm too busy driving the Chops bus anyway...And the Swans are the Premiers...The Ultimate Team...The Ultimate Warriors. They have overcome the highly fancied Hawks in brilliant style. Sydney the 2012 Premiers - Gerard Whately ABC

I'm on the bandwagon. Can't tell much from last night's game but he will be a physical presence and that's a start.
I will NOT NOT NOT miss that bloody channel 10 last 5 minute warning clock. Nor will I miss 10.
It gives the players something special to do and build some extra friendships. However I imagine the concept might be shelved again. In memory of my little Staffy - Dicey, 17.06.2005 to 1.12.2011- I'll miss you mate.Comment

Imagine if Judd, Dale Thomas and some serious counter attack backs (Ryoli etc) played and if we popped Buddy Franklin up front - we would have given them a good run for their money at a game we have now idea how to play !"be tough, only when it gets tough"

I think the larger contingent of players with AFL experience in the Irish team has helped them to match Australia in the fitness and physicality stakes, I know the IR series will always have its detractors but I still believe it is good for both codes. Australia got the balance terribly wrong in picking a very young squad and probably went too small, I don't know whether that has more to do with unavailability of players in the off-season though. But I think that overall for AFL players to experience playing for their country is beneficial.
On the other side, even though the GAA clubs might not be happy about losing players to AFL, the way I see it, with the Irish economy the way it is (Michael Lewis, the author of 'Moneyball', paints a fairly grim picture here -- the country is now full of abandoned construction sites and "ghost estates", where you can literally see the moment the money ran out and the building stopped) giving a handful of young Irish prospects each year the chance to make a living playing professional sport, albeit in a foreign land, is an opportunity that they might not otherwise have if they stayed home, and at least gives them something else to aspire to.Comment
