    Does Anyone Know Why........

Just thought i would post a human interest thread to while away some time.

Does anyone know why Luke Vogels didn't keep his position on the team? He had a good enough start in 2005 and looked to be a likely type, but ... what happened?

I always felt for Luke in 05. If it wasn't for a dopey SCG groundsman and the overuse of a sprinkler he'd have been a premiership player and not Paul Bevan.
..And the Swans are the Premiers...The Ultimate Team...The Ultimate Warriors. They have overcome the highly fancied Hawks in brilliant style. Sydney the 2012 Premiers - Gerard Whately ABC

Paul Bevan is certainly a very underated player, who played well in finals.Just watch the Swans v Blues final in 2010,Bevo played bloody well.He was worthy of getting all his 129 games.

I can't remember but probably same reason that many kids don't make it - the Club can't see them improving and there are better kids in the draft.

He did play some good games from memory.

He's the only Swan I was sure would make it and didn't...so far.

Didn't hear any sprinkler stories at the time though...can anyone elaborate?

Possibly the source of my Bevo dislike.

I wasn't quite as certain of him, but I thought him a better prospect than Campbell or Grundy when they arrived and were playing the warm, up games. Of course back then Heath was a specialist lead/mark/kick full-forward in the 2's. Thank goodness he shifted.

Luke had taken his spot in the seniors for the past month and a half or so straight, and we hadn't made a change to the seniors for about the same length of time. He was dropped for the Geelong SF in favour of Bevo after apparently being "found out" for speed on the big ground at Subi (in the losing QF against WC). Bevo hadn't played seniors for a couple of months or more, and was then (arguably) just as poor in his finals appearances as Luke had been in the QF yet became a premiership player.

I'm pretty sure that Luke was last man out, and the only change since maybe round 19 in that premiership year. He played a part in our month straight of winning that closed out the season and set us up for a run at the GF.

As far as sprinklers, the SCG ground was heavily watered before the 2005 SF which lead to a water logged game on a fine night. I'm assuming Al's getting that wet weather would lead to a logical swap of a big (Luke) for a small (Paul), but I can't recall if it was a late change or not- I thought it was a move by the selection panel when the lists were named?
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time

Ah yes, I recall the sprinkler incident, I thought he was implying Luke tripped on a sprinkler and injured himself.

The change wasn't late. It was made by Roos citing the fact that finals football is a different game more suited to the harder body of Bevan, DESPITE as you note, Vogels contribution at the end of the season.

I don't want to talk about it anymore....

Could have sworn it was a late change (i can even recall Roos explaining why) but I'll cede to your better memories simply because my memory sucks.

Bad luck for Luke obviously but good luck for the rest of us. In a sliding doors scenario had the change not been made we may still have been waiting for that elusive premiership

Its just that I wonder what if.....and what happened to Luke. Where is he, why wasn't he picked up elsewhere, did he make a decision.....all that stuff.

Luke's playing for East Ringwood in the Eastern Football League, he was captain/assistant coach last season.

Luke was Captain and Assistant coach at East Ringwood footy club in 2011. Although they have appointed a new coaching panel he appears to still be on their list for 2012.
