Hats off to Horse & the Swans team, Sam Reid was the key person they needed to retain and personally I dont think they could have done much more thru the trade & draft period to set this team up for the future. We all identified weaknesses this year in the forward setup, delivery skills & outside pace. With keeping Reid from GWS and adding Walsh, Morton, Mitchell, Armstrong, Lockyer, Brown, Briggs & Cunningham they have tried to address these issues. They still may not be top 4 next year, but I couldnt be happier with the way they are setting up for the future.
As to Caj23 constant concerns about Horse, not sure what more he could have done to impress you? He recognised all of the same concerns we have on RWO all year, picked up players he thinks can improve in those areas and even started working on the skills problems as first order of business for next year.

Having one of those "jeez I love this club" moments. We do not screw around when it comes to getting what we think we need.

Amazing deal with Sammy - and indicates to me that the club wants him and he wants the club. A match made in heaven.
I'm pleased with Horse's appointment as well. I see him as a thoughtful, disciplined leader and planner, able to delegate and prepared to take the hard decisions; I don't think it would have been easy to say goodbye to Bevo, for instance. The job of head coach is a bit like being prime minister: either you grow into it or it crushes you. I'd give short odds on Horse growing into it.
Edit added: Puts us in line to get an eventual father-son from Sammy. Double the joy!

He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

Free agency won't apply to players this young, at least not at first. Who knows what the AFLPA will push for in the future. But from next year, players will have to have been at their club for at least 8 years to qualify for free agency.

I agree and young Sammy is such a bonus as well.

Oh no though, what about 2018? I'm sure Clubs will want to take him with Sammy then too. Any new expansion Clubs planned?

Seriously, great news and early Christmas present for the Club and the fans. Sam could be anything in 5 years time and with GWS in existance, the Club really needed a key marquee forward to build excitement around. I'm hoping it will be a Sammy and Tommy tag team up front with guest appearances in support for many years to come.

Yes your right, forgot about that, although I think it was mentioned in the press conference by andrew ireland?? Anyway I was still thinking though that he was gonna do an anthony rocca and run to collingwood and play with his brother, no need to worry about that now thankfully.

It might play the other way now with a bit of luck.

I think the Horse extension is good for club stability and he can coach. Don't foget what he achieved this year minus our FF and CHB. We have also traded and recruited well AGAIN to build a strong list that wil see us past the retirements of the next 2-3 years.

Reid's signing is just awesome and says much about Sydney as a club and the closeness of the player group. It also shows that the club (like me) believes Sam is a once in a generation player not to be squandered.

Caused some speculation at the pub this arvo- generally the group settled on locking in a base of $300k p.a. (average) for the length of the contract.
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time
