    Mediawatch 2012

It may be pre-season but the world of AFL hacks has got off to a flier.

In a story about the 2012 pre-season News Ltd's Fox Sport dug out this one of the Swans running the dunes last season - unless Matt Spanger has returned to Perth Demons.

How is your club set for 2012? | AFL | Fox Sports

This one is a contender for the Pre-Season Cockup Medal. Sam Reid is arguably the hottest young star in the AFL, but he's a stranger to the Age/SMH pictorial editor:

I notice the Fox report says we have delisted Heath Campbell - whoever he was. Maybe Reg's cousin.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

Here's the original pic they used - GWS's Sam Reid. Well done SMH.

Einstein would love the football media.

He said that Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. They continue to underestimate this club every year and every year they look stupid.

That was a market for the first team to have a player say "I'm sorry, I've let the club down, I've let my team mates down and I've let the supporters down."

They keep talking up the Saints but they have done their dash. Bullies, North, Port, Adelaide, GC, GWS, Lions to have low to middling seasons. Tigers, Demons, Freo, Blues, Bombers all need to improve. Hawks, Pies, Cats, Eagles the ones to beat. That leaves us and I will predict top four if our coaching staff can pull it off. I say that because I believe the talent is there it just needs to be harnessed.

Agree 100% with this. This year will be all about the coaches getting the right combinations of players on the field and getting the right game plan for each opponent. The Swans now have the depth and talent that a very good side needs. Top 4 is not an unrealistic aspiration this year and once there anything can happen in Finals.

Always makes me laugh when I read the blurb coming out of clubs and the media about how they have improved and will make the eight this year.

In 2012 it seems that Freo, Melbourne, North Melbourne, Adelaide, Bulldogs and Wretchmond are by their own releases and a lot of the general media hacks going to make the eight.

Now simple mathematics tells me that for every team that rises into the eight then an incumbent team has to drop out of the eight. Who will drop out then to make way for all of these rising to the eight in 2012 teams? I've got Geelong, Collingwood, Hawthorn, Weagles, Carlton and Sydney are almost sure things. St.Kilda and Essendon as wobbly.

                        Interesting off season mind exercise.

                          Herald-Sun The Horrible

The Herald-Sun can't even get the team lists of the AFL clubs right. Our list still boasts Craig Bolton, Paul Bevan, Daniel Bradshaw etc I'm sure you get the drift. It has been said by some, not this site of course, that the Murdoch press never let the truth get in the way of a good story . But for heaven's sake, the clubs send updated lists to the newspapers regularly and would definitely have sent an updated list after the pre-season draft. Not only that, the Herald-Sun covered all the drafts and trade week and still can't seem to get it right. No wonder I look upon this publication with skepticism when they start talking about my football team. If they have the wrong players on the list how could you take them seriously.

I read the sport pages of all the papers although it is doubled up in each city. Age & SMH the same, Herald-Sun & Tele same (on line anyway).
